mentioned this in another thread, but it was that Nelly & Tim McGraw song, which I immediately turned off and reached for the iPod so that that travesty would not be what kicked off 2010 for me.

i happened to be in my car, on the interstate when it was 0:00
song that had just started playing was maxwell's "pretty wings"

and as the song went on, fireworks lit up the sky as i drove,
on either side of me, way in front and even in the rear view
i caught glimpses of it.

next song was tori amos' "give" and it just suit the display
perfectly.

a deserted interstate, with all those fireworks for miles and
miles as i drove.

i hadn't planned to be in the car at that time, but as it came
about, it happened to be one of the most magical new year moments
i've ever experienced. it was just weird and ghostlike and nice.

I figured i would open 2010 with the best song of 2009, if we had a good radio system in the states this song would be an easy addition, but radio sold its soul 20 years ago pretty much

Fun question. I hadn't even thought about it as I don't celebrate new year's but looking back the last song that I listened to of 09 was roy hargrove's speak low and the first song I heard of '10 on my run this morning was electric wire hustle's waters.

I had one of my synths playing some sample & hold stuff in the background while watching fireworks. Sample & hold produces usually those rather random, "robotic" tones that you can hear at the beginning of "The Beautiful Ones" for example, but those circuits can produce slowly evolving ambient textures on their own too with the aid of some effects. I decided to stay home this year, because it was -18 C over here and I really don't like to go out during the night in that type of weather (especially as you're more or less supposed to get assfaced anyway at such occasions). When I woke up in the morning I just put my foobar playlist on random and got, uhm, "With Teeth" by Nine Inch Nails.

It's quite okay though. I don't plan to grow up during this decade either.
