Were music fans saying this in the 60's?

"The music today is horrible...they don't make music like they used to"

Seems like you hear that alot today. Was just wondering if it's always been like that OR does the music today not compare to prior eras?

I'm in the latter category.

Either that or I'm just getting old!

No, because people in the 60's were bucking the system. It was all about not letting the man get you down. Rock n Roll was truly rebellion (and love) in the 60's. Pop music like Neil Sadaka, or older Motown, or Frank Sinatra, or whatever was considered parents music. It was old school, and old thought. The 60's truly rebelled against the previous decades. The 70's did the same, by creating tons of happy music to counter act the dreary head set of the 60's (ergo Disco, funk, etc). The 80's were a back lash against anything. It quickly went from punk to new wave to pop, all within about 3 or 4 years. It's an ebb and flow in music. It repeats itself in thought and attitude.

However, I've not seen much of anything since about 2002 that reminds me of ANYTHING before. So no, they don't make music like they used to. All that stuff I mentioned about one decade bucking another? Yeah, music today blows monkey balls because the artists today making music have NO idea about where they came from, what's happened in the world beyond their fucking Crackberry and the internet. They are aren't reacting to anything. They aren't building off history, or being influenced by anything other than Facebook, and Twitter. Their muse is null.

Isn't it ironic that we live in an age of instant information, and damn near everything is at your finger tips, yet some people still don't know where Canada is on a map, or who the fuck George Clinton is?

Nope, you've got your decades mixes up. It was the 1950s that they were saying it and they were saying it because Elvis had brought rhythmic music to the mainstream. That evil black devil music was making those white kids thrust and gyrate those hips and shake that ass. Oh Lord, they were going straight to hell! Whatever happened to the days of Lawrence Welk and Slim Whitman when music was much slower, calmer, and whiter? lol

Nowadays, people complain but it's the exact opposite. The shit hoppers have kept those evil lyrics but they've brought back the slower rhythmless Lawrence Welk and Slim Whitman days. Well, I guess so. They've got those wrinkled up white haired record executives to please. Now, they've got exactly what they want. They've got dull music back in style and they've got a minstrel show to go right along with it. It reminds them of their good ole days. lol

I'm in the latter category.

Either that or I'm just getting old!

I plan on doing a post on this subject soon.
Folks like to say today's music is comparable to past generations but they never provide any concrete proof.

You get the "you're just old" a lot in lieu of any real evidence.

If you isolate the discussion to Pop music and trace through the decades, you'll see what I mean.

The music back in the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s were radical. Some '90s and '00s stuff is radical but being too normal (or boring) is basically what's promoted. Has been but you see it more often in this generation than before. We still have a lot of variety just not promoted as someone would in the past.

There were probably saying something to that degree. Particularly those hardcore jazz and classical listeners who thought that pop music was elementary in composition (which is true), and lacked sophistication (some of it).

I know a lot of jazz "purist" who love the traditional jazz from the big bands era up to bebop and cool jazz. Some jazz artists in the 60s broke from tradition and starting to experiment with contemporary sounds often heard in pop music like Miles Davis and his former band members like Mtume and Herbie Hancock became pop/r&b producers and musicians, and the traditionalist stop buying Miles Davis music.

Even today, there's an elitist attitude that exist of jazz and classical followers against "pop" music.

Look at Wynton and Branford Marsalis, they started together with the Jazz Messengers, but separated musically because Branford wanted to do more contemporary sounds like his collobration with Sting, while Wynton considered it "selling out" and he formed his own orchestra.

No. Music was pretty awesome throughout my whole life. I still have my 45 of the Beatles' "Let It Be", and stuff from the Supremes, so I go way back.

I didn't start saying "This music sure is bad" until about 1994, or whenever Nirvana and hip-hop really hit the mainstream.

That's when it all went downhill, and then the Fall Out Boy/Green Day sound totally ruined whatever Nirvana hadn't.

people tend to single out hiphop and ignore the rest of the music industry

pop music sucks, rock music sucks (aside from a few classic acts who continue to record), funk doesnt exist etc etc.

Commercial music in all genres is not good (4 the most part). I wouldn't just single out hip-hop.

There's still good music if you just search it. I'm not tryin' 2 b lazy, fuck that. lol

Yeah they did,it's called generational gaps or sometimes shifts..people that listened to the uptempo of Elvis,Little Richard,Chuck Berry complained of the "slower tempo" of the Motown sound(sorry Vainandy but the whole music too slow complaint isnt new)..People complained that the England bands were "bastardizing" southern blues music(sound like someone we know?)..then Flower Power came and changed the whole game.. a real revolution! and u know what some people said.."The music today is horrible...they don't make music like they used to" I could give many examples, but it happens all of the time,it's nothing new..Most music today sucks and you have to find the good stuff..but it is what it is.. thumbs up!
