Can any one else hear the Prince influence in Robin Thicke's music?

Been listening to some of the stuff off Robin Thicke's new album... Very clear that he has been greatly influenced by his Royal Badness, in my opinion.

Any other Thicke fans who hear P in his music? Can anyone else think of some other contemporary artists who have very, very clearly been influenced by Prince?

obviously. His falsetto is the thing that most points to it.

True, although I think his subject matter and style is rather similar, too.

Take this skit off his new album for instance:

I could hear a young, non-religious P doing something like that. lol

Robin credits his biggest musical influence as being Marvin Gaye. If u listen to most of his work, you can tell that Marvin is the biggest influence.

I would love to think all these new R&B singers are wannabe Princes...but Prince didn't invent the Falsetto. I'm sure Prince may be an influence...but I can list at least a dozen singer/groups that sure as hell might have influenced him more or just as much as Prince. Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Earth Wind & Fire, Isley Brothers, Parliament, Funkadelic, Paul McCartney...I could go on...

Come on now, u can hear some Prince influence from Robin Thicke's music. I mean, this goes back 2 his first single from his first album. It's there! Even he described his latest single as "Prince with muscles". LOL! Of course, u can hear a little of Prince in Robin's music.

I don't think we've "jumped the shark" on this one; this guy loves him some Prince and you can hear it without trying. He list Prince as a influence along with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and a few others. Just check out his cut Rollacosta and tell me what you think.
Who ever said Prince has lost it - has lost it. The Kid's still got game!

I was thinking the exact same thing when I was listening to Rollacoasta the other day. That song was actually the inspiration for this thread... Great record. biggrin

You can here vocally Prince's influence on Robin Thicke, but my problem with a lot of artist that are "influenced" by Prince or use his style in their music is they just copy the linn drum beat i.e. Usher's "Trading Places" and maybe the keyboards and nothing else. I think the only Prince inspired song that truly captured the "essence" of Prince and the Minneapolis sound is, D'Angelo's, "How does it feel". Ummm, I'll take that back, Justin Timberlake has come mighty close to the Prince sound, especially on his last album.

There's a non-album track that sounds like Prince is practically on it (maybe he is!). I forget the name of it now. He definitely gives nods to P.

Just heard Sex Therapy. Here's what Robin himself says to describe it:

"Sex Therapy,” the title track, combines “that manly edge of Jodeci with a seductive Prince vocal."

Definitely recognizes our man as an artist worthy of imitation!
