Elvis started rock and roll?

http://www.cnn.com/2003/S...index.html

I really want to hear the opinions about this poll from orgers. They do recognize New Order, though.

From the article:

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- An Elvis Presley cover version of an obscure blues track has been voted the song which did most to change the world.

"That's All Right" was recorded by Elvis as a teenager in 1954 during a jam session in Memphis. The track launched the King's career and is regarded by many as marking the start of rock 'n' roll.

Surely you must realize they don't count.

You won't get a consensus as to what was the first rock recording, but you'll get a lot of people that give the same opinions of the same records.

You women have heard of jalopies
You've heard the noise they make
Well let me introduce my new Rocket 88
Yes it's great, just won't wait
Everybody likes my Rocket 88
Baby we'll ride in style
Moving all along.

V8 motor and this modern design
Black convertible top and the gals don't mind
Sporting with me riding all 'round town for joy
(Blow your horn Raymond, blow)

Step in my Rocket and don't be late
Baby we're pulling out about half past 8
Going 'round the corner and get a fifth
Everybody in my car's gonna take a little nip
Move on out, boozing and cruising along
~Ike Turner/Jackie Brenston (1951)

Sam Phillips says that "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats, (led by Ike Turner) was the first rock and roll song. And since he is who he is his people take that as The Gospel. Actually it was the first rock recording that he recorded in his own studio, although he may be close there were recordings of similar rock rhythms and heavy back beats (and rock and roll is about da beat, baby) during the late 1940s. Most of us who pinpoint the first rock record(s) point out the early or mid-50s as its starting point. Technically that's inaccurate. People like Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris and Fats Domino among others were recording songs of equal rhythmic characteristics by the late 40s. Before the style was guitar-based it was piano-based, before it was piano-based, it was saxophone-based.

Sam Phillips knew what he was doing when he said if he could get a White man to sing like a Black man and have the feel of a Black man he'd make a million dollars.

Unfortunately, the Rock genre is the most mythologized genre in the history of American music. Don't believe the hype. People shouldn't let the mainstream media spoon feed them history and take it all as gospel. It should be questioned and explored further than the traditional media wants to go. There are rude awakenings ahead for those who are comfortable with The Myths.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Louis Jordan&His Band get credit as well for bringing it out as well.in fact when you hear a Cut like "Beans&Cornbread" it makes perfect sense for Bill Hailey&The Commets to doing "Rock Around the Clock"".but one thing is true:it's Cash Money with a White Face doing R&B Music.them is the rules.
