2009 Was The Biggest EVER Year For U.K. Single Sales

I know you're probably thinking what I'm thinking... Single album tracks can now be counted in the Singles Charts; so the figures are useless without a comparative figure for whole albums.

Despite the levels of piracy, the BPI was able to announce in October that we are living in "the era of the digital single", after figures revealed 2009 was biggest ever year for UK singles, with more than 117m sold.

It's interesting that the "best year ever" info was tacked onto the end of a piece about how filesharing is harming sales of recorded music. The record companies just don't get it... Filesharing is the equivalent of making a mix-tape or taping the weekly chart show from the radio. Fans will always buy (whenever they can afford to), to get their favourite act into the charts and onto the radio.
