I understand that she might not be for everyones taste, but I love this vocal in particular.

It's all in her phrasing. She always makes you feel like she's singing directly to you and no-one else. You can tell that she really feels the lyrics and understands them. I can't explain it any better than that.

She is one of my favorites from her era. She blew her respect as a person by dipping into a charity and the psychic network and unfortunately I think it also ruined people's respect for her as an artist.
I love her voice and I appretiate that she didn't belt out every song the way that many do now. To me she was a little like a female Nat King Cole. I am glad other people appretiate her too. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

I agree with you so much! I'm an appreciator!! That entire psychic friends affiliation made me scratch my head?!!! Be glad and rejoice for the Lord has done marvelous things!

the problem with her post-Bacharach/David work is that it doesn't approach the sophistication that their material had. there is a complexity, sophistication and style to their songs that suits her and she brings out those qualities in their music.
and whoever said that other people later did those songs to better effect than she did, i call shenanigans. her readings of those songs are the definitive versions. she did tend toward the schmaltzy and uninspired after that, but there wasn't really any meat to that stuff for her to sink her teeth into. she is a phenomenal talent as a vocalist and interpreter. What did the comedian George Wallace say, 'Dionne should use her psychic power to predict when she was going to have another hit'. It was reported she didn't think Wallace's joke was all that funny. Oh well.....

Damn..How did I miss this thread? My pops was buddies with Dionne and her sister Dee Dee (R.I.P) back in the 1950's era of East Orange NJ. Ms Warwick's records were played on heavy rotation in my house when I was a kid.
The 1979 (or 80) "Dionne" LP is classic. One of the clearest voices of her era.

[Edited 1/2/10 20:04pm] That word interpreter is a great word for her. It's not something alot of singers try to do anymore. Maybe that's why singers like Peggy Lee and Dionne are not so great to alot of people younger than Dionne's last hit. SoulAlive said: Dionne Warwick is GREAT.I have several of her albums. Some of my favorites:
"Walk On By" "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" "Deja Vu" "Heartbreaker" "Then Came You" with the Spinners "Make It Easy On Yourself" "Yesterday" (one of the best remakes of a Beatles classic) She had amazing songs in the 60s,70s and 80s.A very talented lady with an impressive catalog.I wish they would put together a multi-disc box set. I only have a single disc of her hits (I think it's the definitive collection and it sure is...gets all the signature hits I know, including those from the 80s which I really like..."Reservations For Two" is going through my head right now). I like her. I'd say she's all that.

The Debarges have been endlessly sampled and their music has been declared legendary and their 1983 LP "In A Special Way" is regarded as a classic. To each his own. But like I said, this thread is not about Debarge and they don't need to be talked about here.
I was talking about Dionne and that is my perception of her [Edited 12/25/09 12:56pm] Dearest Scriptgirl. Don't make me go off Dionne might have lost a lot of her luster but Dionne in her younger days was as much an equal as any vocal powerhouse. She might not have belted out those crazy ass Re-Re notes however there is everything to be said about the purity of her voice. She did something impossible. She breathed more life into compositions that were already as alive as life itself. I would have liked to have seen what Jam & Lewis might have been able to do with her, much like Luther/Kashif had. Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Young'uns! That's all I got to say about this mess. Listen to the Bacharach/David tunes are perfect pop tunes. For my listening ears nobody - NOBODY - did heartbreak the way Dionne did on those tunes!
Did you listen to any of the ones that were posted yet? I came out of org semi-retirement to post this.

I've heard those San Jose and Walk On By songs. Straight up lounge and elevator music. Or that stuff you hear when you're on hold with the credit card peeps.

I guess when you're not used to hearing melody, harmony and orchestration you might consider it elevator music.
Nonetheless... | |

Nonetheless... I loved her as a kid when most people favored Dianna Ross over Dionne. Dionne had a certain poise combined with that smooth, clear voice; I just loved her image.
