See? This is what I was trying to say. No one knew what to do with her better than Bacharach and David. They understood her. The rest didn't. Some post-Bacharach joints were decent ("You're Gonna Need Me" being my favorite) but it's like they really didn't capture the soulful vulnerability of her Bacharach/David recordings especially those recorded between 1962 and 1966.

What about what she did with Issac. "De Je Vou", has that Bacharach/ David feel to it.

As much as I love her 60s stuff with Bacharach and David,my favorite Dionne Warwick album is her 1979 'Dionne' album, which was produced by Barry Manilow.

Dionne's music hit me in the chest the minute I heard Love Song from...

One of the most beautiful melodies ever written and sung. She didn't shout or wail ONCE, but every note & lyric she sang were felt like a big heavy brick.

And for the record, being Aretha-like doesn't necessarily make you the equivalent of a good singer shrug the reason why she stood out and her duplicators didn't is the emotional delivery, same EXACT thing goes with Dionne although she struck the same chord with a different emotional delivery method.

The Bacharach/David stuff alone makes the answer a 'yes' but I love the Dionne album and all the duets with Stevie, Kashif, Johnny Mathis, Luther Vandross... there are so so so so many songs she's done that are either classics, memorable, or just darn good.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

falloff

I only like "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again", "Deja Vu", "Then Came You", and "Heartbreaker". There's another one I like from her Bee Gees era but I can't think of it.

She does remind me a little of a lounge singer though. I remember when she was on "Solid Gold" and the puppet Madame was on there talking with her. My grandmother used to think that they were trying to do a look alike parody of Dionne with that puppet. lol

What's wrong with Dionne's voice?

She just sings in her chest voice.

I think that's a good surmise of it. She doesn't have that "belting" ability like some other females. But in her defense, not all female singers NEED that. For women of her generation, in the old school days, they didn't have to belt anything out. Diana Ross is in the same field as Dionne Warwick. Diana can sing, but she can't really belt something out. She sings from her chest, not her diaphragm.

Dionne's voice was fine for only Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Outside of it, producers really didn't know what to do with her. The closest came from Isaac and the Bee Gees.

Exactly. nod

However, I did like Dionne work with The Spinners.

The thing is, Bacharach/David didn't need her to be Aretha or Whitney.
They simply needed someone to sing pitch-perfect melodies as written.
There's also a certain sensitivity required of that material which her voice effectively delivered.

Dionne is class personified. The lady can sight read and her intonation is perfect.

Here is Dionne with Richard Carpenter.

I'm sorry but anyone who has a pic of Debarge as their avatar cannot be throwin' the corny label around at anyone whatsover, especially at one of the most tasteful, understated pop vocalists that has ever graced a mic.

With great voices, like with great guitar players, you know within a few notes who it is. Dionne qualifies. Apart from that she had te fortune of being the muse of one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, Burt Bacharach. In 200 years time they will still know Bacharach, Lennon & McCartney, Ulvaes & Andersson and Prince.

I mean I'm not trying to slam the Debarges but she was involved in straight out MAGIC. Some of the purest, most magical and wonderful pop songs ever created. She was the vehicle that delivered those songs. Lounge singer my ass hammer

I beg to differ. The Debarges have been endlessly sampled and their music has been declared legendary and their 1983 LP "In A Special Way" is regarded as a classic. To each his own. But like I said, this thread is not about Debarge and they don't need to be talked about here.

I was talking about Dionne and that is my perception of her

Dearest Scriptgirl. Don't make me go off lol

wink

Dionne might have lost a lot of her luster but Dionne in her younger days was as much an equal as any vocal powerhouse. She might not have belted out those crazy ass Re-Re notes however there is everything to be said about the purity of her voice. She did something impossible. She breathed more life into compositions that were already as alive as life itself.
