Despite what people say about "cheesy" or whatever, Michael/Ridgley were a great songwriting duo. The fact is whether you like or hate "Wake Me Up", you know it. It was catchy, fun, fun video.
George always wrote great tunes on his own. It's been great to hear his growth as an artist and as a singer. He's still one of the best voices in the industry. I hate that he fucks up in his personal life sometimes, but I guess I can't do anything about it. He's been good to his fans, despite going through an angry period in his life. I remember when he did an interview around the time for Unplugged, and he was just indignant about his sexuality and how it "is just not anyone's business!" He wasn't mean toward the report (which I think was Kurt Loder), but rather just the idea that because he's a celebrity, he owes everyone every piece of information about his life. To an extent he was right; no celebrity does. As much as I love Janet on the female group of singers, George heads up the male group. The one person Prince or MJ should have worked with was George Michael. Andrew Ridgley has been a bit more quiet on the music scene, but I think he and George still have good vibes towards each other, as there's really no reason for animosity otherwise. I do wish he had pulled out Andrew on stage during those last two London shows, for "I'm Your Man" or "Everything She Wants", just as a one last brouhaha for the sake of it. Fans would have went NUTZ. Pretty amazing that Wham! only had 3 studio albums, followed by 3 compilation albums, and yet their legacy is always remembered as fun pop music. That is helped a lot by George being a big solo artist (the same way fans love old Jacksons music even more because MJ was a huge solo artist). Either way, Wham! has a solid place in music history. By the way, the TwentyFive video set is SO worth the cost. [Edited 12/19/09 17:48pm]

George is kind of like Sting, but fell even harder into the trap of wanting to be taken seriously.
But what both of them had was a knack for catchy hooks. Wham might have been fluffier than the Police, but there is no denying those songs are catchy. And some of them are just plain good. I heard most of the music as a kid through my sister's door, but I know those songs like the back of my hand. And through the years, the tunes have stuck with me. They had true personality. It's too bad what happened to George. He should have done a dozen albums by now. But there is some kind of dissatisfaction that kept him from continuing to do what he did best. My Legacy

That and the long legal battle with.....Sony I think it was.....that shit REALLY cost him. It cost him emotionally. He went through two deaths (mom, and lover) during all that time. "Amazing" talks about that and how his relationship with Kenny pulled him out of that funk. It also cost him in time. He was just flat out depressed and distracted. Even GM himself said he put out Songs From The Last Century because he was having a hard time writing songs, so he just did some of his favorite covers. It was eight years between Older and Patience, with Century being in between those two. Oddly, he did keep performing here and there, releasing a couple of new videos for promotion on the Ladies and Gentlemen The Best Of... compilation, those being "Outside", and his duet with Mary J. Blige, "As" (Stevie cover), as well as the Older:Upper bonus disk. I also loved his song with Toby Bourke, "Waltz Away Dreaming", which is a beautiful song and video. GM sure ain't broke after the Sony thing. If Sony had just let up, and let him do things they way he wanted, he probably would have put things out a bit more. If they had supported GM and promoted his album, and let him do the kind of promotional stuff he wanted, things just would have been more copacetic. Side note, after doing some reading recently, I didn't realize that, "Fastlove" was written about a short lived love affair GM had with a bloke named Brett Charles, who was a city banker, and that he met in Kazakhstan. Go figure.

I love Wham as much as I love George's solo work. From the fun and catchy pop songs, to the more soulful tracks, they didn't make a song I didn't like.

Yes! I've always thought so, too. They are my three favorite voices in music, and a collaboration would be/have been a dream for me.

Me, too. O/T, but I've also been listening to "December Song" a lot. I think it has a pretty melody.
