It was a good show. I really loved the Soul Train Line with "1999" bumping.

The songs:
"Sexual Healing" - Marvin
"It's Time For Change" - Barry White
"Young Love" - Janet (Performance)
Scramble Board (Willie McGee)
"777-9311" - The Time
"Ribbon In The Sky" - Stevie Wonder (Video)
"Do Wah Ditty" - Zapp
"I Keep Forgettin" - Michael McDonald (Performance...with Louis Johnson on bass, Greg Phillengains on keys, and Jeff Pocarro on drums)
"Shipping Out" - Glen Edward Thomas
"Say You Do" - Janet (Performance)
"1999" - P (Soul Train Line)
"I Gotta Try" - Michael McDonald (Performance)

I knew they would finally get around to Janet Jackson. Well, at least it was from the early 1980s and not the late 1980s...thank God. Anybody wanna take bets on which legend will be next week? Marvin Gaye? Shitney Houston? The O'Jays? I just hope they don't dip into the 1990s to play that Prince episode. Stay the hell out of the 1990s. lol

This was a good episode. Probably the best they've played so far with the exception of the Luther Vandross episode from the same era. This was definately my favorite era of Janet Jackson, although she did look funny as hell up there dancing all stiff like a white girl. She looked like she couldn't even bend her knees. I'd rather see that though instead of a stage full choreographed Broadway looking shit. lol

I am with VainAndy. With the exception of maybe one artist, there is no one Soul Train ep I wanna see from the 90s. Hell, I don't wanna see anything past '88.

No, Michael McDonald is NOT boring. He is one of the best songwriters out there and is one of the greatest blue eyed soul singers of all time.

The best parts for me was them playing 1999 and 777-9311, with no one really knowing that the Minneapolis sound was about to TAKE OVER

You should have seen the episode they played two or three years ago on WGN from the same era as this episode. That episode featured guest stars Vanity 6 and Carl Carlton. It was just a much better episode because of the mood of the dancers that particular day. They were really feeling it that day.

They played "1999" during the Soul Train line on that episode also but the dancers were really getting into shaking ass and hollering and screaming. Of course they were still hyped up after just seeing Vanity 6 which they absolutely went wild over. The dancers just didn't seem to be feeling it on this week's episode. Some of them were just bobbing from side to side like they were going through the motions. I don't know, maybe they didn't want to throwdown too hard and make Janet look bad with her horrible dancing. lol

You know, I think the episode you mentioned aired after 1999 had started to get the crossover appeal. After all, that was during an era when a song actually built up to a peak and died slowly. Nowadays, the peak within a week or 2, then die in less than 2 months.

I remmeber that episode lol I saw it when it originally aired in January 1983.I went crazy when Vanity 6 performed, lol. That was such an amazing time for music.Nearly every song they played on that episode was a good one: "Muscles" by Diana Ross,"She's Just A Groupie" by Bobby Nunn, etc.

Damn,I miss that era! mad

There is a difference in not liking someone's voice and saying a person can't sing.
