Did Arrested Development sample Maze and Frankie Beverly? I know that "Joy and Pain" was used by a few hip hop songs in the past. Okay, so I'm listening to the song today, and near the end, there's a "Hey hey heeeeey hey aaayyyyy hey" type ad-lib. It got my attention. I'm like....I've heard that before.
Then I remembered Arrested Development's "Mr. Wendel". That type of ad-lib is throughout the song. I'm not sure if it's a sample, or a resung line from the Maze song, or just a happy coincidence. Thoughts?

I think so, but it's not credited. Speech "borrowed" riffs and catch phrases on that whole album and they aren't credited as samples. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Yeah, he "borrowed" the "Tennessee" line from Prince too, and ended up paying $100,000 to PRN for it.

Ya'll jokin, right? "to Tennessee" is throughout the song, in a near regular Prince voice, a bit higher, and a lower one, as well as the one at the end of the song. Speech never asked for the rights for it, and viola...got sued. They settled for $100,000.

I'm sure he sued a few people that didn't pay to use his samples. I wonder did "Top Chef" have to pay him for sampling "Round and Round"? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

hmmm...I would say that it just happens to sound the same.
It's not really similar enough, to my ears, to be anything other than coincidence. I do love that 79 years,45 months,3 days,6 hours,12 seconds album, though.(or whatever it's called)
