I have a lot of his albums on vnyl and out of all the "best of's" out there, the most consistent u can get is the box set "Dance Of The Rainbow Serpent" IMO. Not only does it obviously have more room 4 the album cuts and lesser known tunes as well as the hits, you also get 2 see that Carlos was/is more than just the "latin rock guy". He and all the cats he's played with over the years are forward thinking spirits/musicians in the same class as his heroes John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus and Miles Davis. [Edited 12/17/09 15:40pm]

The reissue that is... I don't care for his Maria Maria output or whatever... just the 'old' solid Santana

As far as what I like personally, which is the 1st album through the 70s period, these look pretty good.
...The Collection: Santana/Abraxas/Santana III (the first 3 albums) ...Original Album Classics: Caravanserai/Love Devotion Surrender/Welcome/Borboletta/Amigos (albums 3, 4, 5, 7 & 8) That pretty much covers that period except for the missing album 6 in the second comp... ...Illuminations (a tribute to the music of John Coltrane w/Alice Coltrane) Rounding out the 70s... Festival - 1977 Moonflower - 1977 (part live, part studio) Inner Secrets - 1978 Oneness: Silver Dreams Golden Realities - 1979 Marathon - 1979 The only essential in this group might be Moonflower as it was the first Santana album to feature live performances. See, when I 1st started tryin 2 play music all I would hear when I'd listen 2 albums were the guitars. lol It wasn't untill I bought both "Lotus" and"Moonflower" in 03' and applied it 2 what I was tryin 2 do that I started listenin 2 the WHOLE band.lol After that as crazy as I was about Carlos' axe, I became a fan of Mike Shrieve,(Drums), Greg Walker (Vocals),David Brown/Pablo Tellez,(Bass),Tom Coster,(Organ/Keyboards), Chester Thompson,(Organ/Keyboards),and I wanted 2 learn all I could about Pete Escovedo(Timbales, Congas) and Armando Peraza (Congas).
