Why would you sit it out? Exactly what are you looking for? People pay more than $30 to see one artist. Those are old school prices. 4 acts at less than $10 each - WTF?
GO!

Point taken, Blaque.....

Not so much a financial concern, more one of my level of respect for the original bands.....knowing that the bill here should prolly more acurately be..."Larry Dodson, Sugar, Drac & Dazz (still mostly intact)"

Some of these old school shows look pretty limp on YouTube.....hence why I'm askin you other hardcores out there if it's worth the time.....or just gonna feel "sad".

Let me share a little something with you: I know a lot of the musicians in those bands that you mentioned and I can tell you this: you will be getting as good of a show as you are going to get. Those bands don't have slouch musicians in them; they are just not the cats you knew from back in the day. Much in the same way that Tori was a good but different replacement for Jesse in the Time, a lot of the "replacements" are great musicians in their own right who also grew up listening to the music they are playing. Its really a matter of what your expectations are. If you are looking to recapture the feel that you got when you saw them back in the day (if you did) then you might want to pull up a VHS tape and reminisce. If you want to see them because you like and want to support the artists and want to hear the old songs live again, then go.

Do you even have to ask? All four are absolutely great groups and The Barkays alone are worth going to see. Just wait till they bring that Python out. lol

Those clips of The Barkays on youtube are tame and so is their performance on the "United We Funk Allstars" DVD. I've seen them live probably seven or eight times and have an absolute ball every time I see them. Of course I get drunk out of my skull but that's another story. lol

I have more fun at a Barkays concert than I do at a Prince concert. Those guys put on a show. The band throws down hard and plays some of their greatest jams. Larry is a show all by himself. He is wild as hell. He snaps his finger and a big ball of fire comes up from his hand and he brings a big ole yellow python out every time (except for one of the outdoor festivals that was more family oriented). Hell, one year he had two snakes with him, the yellow python and the normal one. My ass got so drunk the last time I went to see them that I almost reached up and touched the yellow one. Now you know I was some kind of drunk because I am deathly afraid of snakes. I won't even touch a snake skin boot. lol

Again...agreed & well said.

I think Slave is my problem.....that's my #1 funk band....WORSHIP those guys...such a catalog & so stellarly tallented at every position. It's NOT like Mark fuckin Adams is gonna walk out there with the mirror bass & the flangers & start yankin & crankin.....ya kno? Just some slick 2nd stringer...and Hicks' fat ass LOL.

I think Imma grab the GF & go. I have a dog in the fight anyway. Nate & Marlon are touring members of Dazz & they are founding members of Pleasure (Portland's main funk band). I gotta rep for em.....hell.....I'd pay 30 just to have COFFEE with those 2 dudes (and I don't drink coffee).

Does this mean there are competing versions of the Ohio Players?

I've seen that happen with the Stylistics, War, and other groups where members can't resolve their conflicts.

I saw Slave over the summer. They were not that bad. The only part i didn't care for was them performing Steve Arrington's solo cuts. The lead singer used to be the lead singer of Magnum Force (Share My Love and Straight From The Heart). He even sung Share My Love at the end of the show. biggrin

Sugarfoot is pretty much Ohio Players to me so I'd definitely go see him.

I wonder if the Pleasure guys will break out with Glide. dancing jig

Thanx for the recent review, man. Yeah....even if Sugar fronts em....guess he'd be the one I'd want doin it.

As for a rendidtion of "Glide".....if they do...that place ("The Crystal Ballroom"...VERY cool venue here in Portland) would fuckin explode.

Dick Clark finally left it? I haven't seen it in years but it hasn't been a "rockin" eve since the 1980s.

He hasns't left it completely. He make an annual brief cameo on-screen...but he's pretty profoundly impaired....can't talk so well. Still looks terrific though, IMO.....and hell....he's Dick Clark.....NOTHING left to prove.

I never thought I'd live to see the day that Dick Clark had a flaw due to age. The man has definately found the fountain of youth. I'm glad to hear he still looks great though. He and Prince must be drinking the same water.

No, I believe "The World's Oldest Teenager" is still hanging in there (...for what it's worth). Though he's kinda passed the torch over to Ryan Seacrest, but he still makes a brief (...very brief) appearance during the program. I haven't personally seen him for about 2 years though (...at which time he looked noticeably ill...to me), but admit I've had other things to do these past few New Year's Eve's, lol. It'll be a sad day when we lose Dick Clark.

Oh no, we can't let Dick Clark get old. He's a living American landmark. If it were possible to renovate a human like they did in the 1980s with the Statue of Liberty, Dick would be the one. It will be a major void when he's gone, kinda like the New York skyline without the twin towers.

Thought bout this summore & Blaque is quite right here. I've seen Tori live with The Time (as many of you I'm sure have)....and although they are apples & oranges as players (to a degree)....I'd take Tori over Jesse on guitar....I think they are actually a BETTER band...he is REALLY shreddy.

Same deal with Eric Young on the four string in ConFunkShun.....he's stellar....again....a better band, I think.

Bottom line: SOME of the "old school acts" still touring are as good or beter sounding than they were back in the day.

My advice: If ConFunkShun, Lakeside, Gap, Cameo, The Time...and others...set a gig near you....BE THERE.
