Great song. I never heard the vocal version until years later though. Back in the day when that song was released, one of our local R&B stations would play the instrumental version of it right before it got time for them to do the news. They would play a different instrumental or jazzy type song each hour right before the news such as "Number One" by Patrice Rushen or "Breezin" by George Benson. That way they could fade it down when it got exactly to 20 minutes before the hour when the news came on without stopping a song with vocals abruptly.
