* Janet INTRODUCED the headset mic. * Jimmy and Terry with the Yamaha Keytars (I have one now becuase of that video) and the pseudo-live feel. * Janet "fake-playing" the piano at the end. * The break-down into What HAve you Done for Me riffs It's basically a Time song with Janet on lead vocals and Morris-style attitude "Band, don't make me lost it!" Lost it? Ooops! I guess I "lost it" I was so excited I was typing too fast. I know she says "don't make me lose it!" Yeah, it was cool that they rerecorded the song and then "performed" to it. They did the same on some awards show so it looked like they were live and jamming. I remember Jam and Lewis talking about it. And at the time, it did look "live", but alas.....it, and "Control", was pure Memorex.
I think you are referring to the Grammy's (87 or 88?) I actually missed that when it aired (I was so pissed!) but have seen an poor quality clip on youtube. The crowd of music industry pros went CRAZY!!! I know the Control video is "fake live" but I tihnk that Grammy performance might have been actual live. I have to go look for it onw again. It was a medly of What Have you Done for me and some of Control I think. The rhythm of how she sang WHYDFML was totally changed. She ended one song and was like "Wait a minute, I forgot somtehing" and then went into another song. I wish they'd release that in hi def. And whoever said kate Bush started the headset mic, I never saw that, and as far as pop culture/mainstream is concerned, Janet is the one who made it a de-rigeur element of in-concert dance/performances (ironically she mainly lipsyncds with it now).

It was either the AMA or the Grammys. But it was recorded, not live. I read Jimmy talking about it for that very reason, to really give the illusion they were doing something different onstage, and jamming live. It won't come out in high def because it wasn't recorded in high def. They can try to spruce up the audio and video, but there's only so much you can do with stuff that old and sitting in a vault somewhere.

OK I found a slightly better version on Youtube.
It was WHYDFML and Nasty. I'm usually pretty good about telling the sync, but the first part sounds like she might be singing some of it live. I don't think Jimmy and Terry are even playing the actual keyboard parts tough so probably the whole thing was done ahead of time with maybe some live bits by Janet over the track (esp for WHYDFML)? At any rate, this is Janet at her best! I LOVE HER Hair, look, moves.... everything!!!

I really think, having watched these videos, that you really need to be a bit of a Jackson fan to get into her stuff. It's like the weaker end of that particular gene pool. Pretty cringe-inducing for a non-fan like me.

Oh we're all good at that. We've all seen this sort of thing for eons. But it's Memorex as far as the band goes.

probably my favourite videos by her are:
1.What's It Gonna Be (ICONIC) 2.Got Till It's Gone 3.Rhythm Nation 4.Love Will Never Do (although I dislike the song itself) 5.The Pleasure Principle I think she has done extremely well videography wise... She's just behind Madonna and Kylie in my book Some of her worst videos: 1.Just A Little While (WTF? lol) 2.Son Of A Gun (everything about that single was a disaster video included) 3.Because Of Love (I get it it was promoting the tour but it looks extremely cheap) 4.Twenty Foreplay (boring) 5.Go Deep (such a good song and such an unimpressive video)

Yeah, that one video was filmed on a British TV show's set I think. Very quickly done. But I believe there was a confusion w/ the singles coming out, and perhaps a quickie video was put together. I almost feel like "Just A Little While" was leaked, and an accidental single that caught on, when they had intentions of releasing another song first instead. Not sure if that's why they put together such a weird video (seems rushed, is my point). 2. It's odd, because all the girls walking down the hall, etc....it just never goes anywhere. Where's the big dance number with all of them? I'm waiting for a climax, besides finding the guy and going after him. It was almost like "Thriller (Lite)" 3. It was done on tour, and was basically a compilation of her travels. Obviously the shot of her in the chair was done in one quick shot (or two) 4. Ditto. Not a fan of that song, despite trying. 5. The concert versions are always better because they're faster. I always felt the song on the album was too slow in BPM. It should have been a bit faster, and more of a party jam. Perhaps that would have changed the ideas for the video had the muse been correct.

Thank you I stand by my comment. And while I am far from the typical, narrow-minded Amerian and have lived abroad myself, it would be hard to argue that American pop culture---especially American pop music--- has not had a bigger influence on world pop culture than any other country's pop culture output (with possible exception of the Beatles, but kate Bush is hardly at the level of Beattles' impact on pop culture). And I 've heard of Kate Bush but had no idea she did concert/dance stuff a la Madonna and Janet.
