IMO, all her Rhythm Nation era videos are wonderful. That was when she had the desire to bring something new to the table while keeping a positive message for youngins to follow. The cinematography in Rhythm Nation, The Knowledge and Miss You Much is brilliant. The choreography is iconic and still emulated by many performers today.

That was some tight shit back in the day, and it still is today! I think it's hard to see, but when Janet first bolts out of the door, and we hear her say "prejudice.....NO", she's actually trying to wipe the "black" off her hand w/ her other thumb, as if to say "it doesn't come off, you can't catch it". The director mentioned this later on too. I remember watching the Making Of, and how she kept doing that bridge scene (about the 1:04 mark) over and over and over and over and over and over. I was about tired of the song after that! I love how the girls walk in and just kind of slide into the routine. It doesn't seem "staged" or robotic. It just happens naturally. Fucking brilliant.

I have the Making Of on VHS lol! I admired how innovative she was at the time and she just kept getting better and better of the years. She also mentioned why she wore black all the time in some magazine article. I forgot what she said. People were teasing her about it too but she stuck to her guns and remained optimistic about the whole project. I'm glad she did since it left a mark in music history (chart and impact) that remains untouched.

There is a clip somewhere of a couple of girls who were so impacted by the album, that they got back in school and cleaned up their act. They were reading the letter to Janet, crying their eyes out. That album is still her best, by far. It was so spot on. Wasn't a bad song or idea on it. Even on the janet. album I could have deleted 1 or 2 songs, and been happier; same with Velvet Rope. But RN1814 was just truly 10 out of 10. I remember at the time, I actually predicted every single in order that they were released. It wasn't genius or anything. I think I was just so in tune with the album, the feel, the mood, and the music in general, that I just knew what I thought would be great. (The same way we compile our own Greatest Hits or whatever for someone, I created my own "this, this, this, then this....." type singles release.) She truly worked that album, its songs, and the tour. Seems like RN went on forever. I lived in 3 states during the time RN was being promoted. I was in OK City for "Miss U Much", and was in LA at the beginning of 1990. By 1991 when I was in Tulsa, and a friend was sending me RN tour posters. The tip toe pose on the left of the above image was one of the posters she sent me. I just LOVED that poster!!!

Control!!!
* Janet INTRODUCED the headset mic. * Jimmy and Terry with the Yamaha Keytars (I have one now becuase of that video) and the pseudo-live feel. * Janet "fake-playing" the piano at the end. * The break-down into What HAve you Done for Me riffs It's basically a Time song with Janet on lead vocals and Morris-style attitude "Band, don't make me lost it!"

Lost it? Yeah, it was cool that they rerecorded the song and then "performed" to it. They did the same on some awards show so it looked like they were live and jamming. I remember Jam and Lewis talking about it. And at the time, it did look "live", but alas.....it, and "Control", was pure Memorex.

you know what; THAT might have to be the winner. the dancing alone in that just kills!!! that song hits hard and she looks tough. it was definitely influential for me. and you know a bunch of people busted their ass trying to do the 'step up on the chair' move. Top Six.....cause I couldn't stop typing
6. When I Think of You (you just can't wait watching what is gonna happen next and Janet's smile is magnetic...it draws u totally in) 5. Control (The collabo is just sickening this was the best! I love the pissed off look and she comes down that small ramp) 4. The Knowledge ( She looks like her brother so much in this, great visual to a song) 3. Escapade (This looked like a old Hollywood musical, what a piece of art) 2. Alright (Calloway, the Hat and Zoot suit...Whaaat! shut yo mouth chile') 1. Pleasure Principle ( The weave was sick back then and come on Janet looking as if she's freestylin'....no one has touch this video yet in my opinion) I like the covered up Janet, at one point the pushed up breast in every video was just overkill. I didn't want to see her like that all ofthe damn time. Her new video Make Me...she is absolutely beautiful in that video....she couldn't be anymore sexier and she covered the hell up! Janet is my second favorite female entertainer... WERK BITCH! (where is a two snaps and a circle emoticon when you need one! "A Man Can't Ride Your Back Unless It's Bent" MLK 4/3/68
