i was going to say that, but knowing that it wasn't her debut i figured it wouldn't count. but i think to most people outside of her native Canada that would probably count.

to be fair, both "debuts" are iconic in their own way:

I really hate to admit it, but Britney Spears' Baby One More Time is one of them

I agree with Madonna's Holiday too, even though Everybody was the first single.

And of course Jackson 5's I Want You Back, as so many people have sampled it over the years.

I love how a question is asked and then people make up their own damn rules and do and say what they want. nuts

My contribution:

Sade- Smooth Operator (A new sound is born.)

Mariah Scary- Visions of Love (as much as I hate her, this song set the standard for entire career)

Duran Duran- Planet Earth (once again, set the bar for their entire career)

Pearl Jam- Alive (with Nirvana, created the whole grunge phase)

Dionne Warwick-Don't Make Me Over (Does this count? I can't confirm if she released anything prior.)
Space for sale...

I'd think you'd be used to that by now. smile

Anyhoo, without even thinking about it too tough, this one immediately came to mind.

That was faaaaar from her debut single though lol

But I get what you're saying, its her debut single at Atlantic records.

****
Actually her Atlantic debut single was "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)" in 1967. It went Numner 1 R&B and Number Pop, "Respect" was her second Atlantic single - it went Number 1 R&B and Pop. Her debut single was "Today I Sing The Blues" on Columbis Records in 1960. Technically her first ever single was in the Spring of 1956 with "Precious Lord Take My Hand", recorded by the 14 year old future Queen of Soul.
