Grammy travesties

So, the Grammy awards are coming up. There have been some - to put it mildly - questionable choices by the Grammy voters in the past.

Reading through the list of best album winners, this one really caught my eye:

1985 Can't Slow Down performed by Lionel Richie, produced by James Anthony Carmichel & Lionel Richie

Also Nominated:

* She's So Unusual performed by Cyndi Lauper
* Purple Rain performed by Prince
* Born in the U.S.A. performed by Bruce Springsteen
* Private Dancer performed by Tina Turner

Um, excuse me? Can't Slow Down is a very good record, but better than Purple Rain or Born in the USA? Or even Private Dancer or She's so Unusual? It beat 4 iconic albums...

The other thing I take from this is: comparing this crop of albums to what gets nominated these days is a sad commentary on current popular music.

so what are some of your Grammy WTF moments? ?

Milli Vanilli, not because it turned out that they lip-synched, but because they won in the first place!

The Grammys should have given the award to the people who made the music rather than take it back--if they really felt it was good music.

The Grammys waiting until 1983 to award Marvin Gaye a Grammy.

The Grammys not getting Teddy Pendergrass a Grammy.

Same for Diana Ross.

Album of the Year.

Well, in 1985, it makes sense that Lionel would have won. Lionel crossed over BIG TIME in 85. Hell, he had country, pop, r&b and adult contemporary hits all on one album. That's why he got album of the year.

PR was big, but at that time I don't think P had established himself as a long-term artist to most people. At that time, a lot of people thought 1999 was his first album, so it makes sense.

I think what happened was...

At the 1984 Grammys, many people think that Lionel's 'Can't Slow Down' was overshadowed by Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'.So at the 1985 Grammys, they decided to finally give Lionel the awards he deserved, even though many people assumed that Prince would overshadow poor Lionel again...lol...

lol It was a tough call.'Thriller','Can't Slow Down' and 'Purple Rain' are excellent records. It's just a shame that they all had to compete against each other.

I agree that P should have won, but Lionel and Tina were the veterans at that time.

well, the Grammys always gives weight to people who are long time heavyweights in the industry. So at that time it was Lionel, and Prince was the newcomer. Later Steely Dan beat out OutKast, and Prince won awards in the past couple years, too, for songs that weren't early as big as Lionel's were that year.
