sampling? like it or not?

What do you all think about a lot of the current songs these days that sample beats, lyrics or even direct vocals from other songs?

It kind of annoys me. lol

I mean is it that hard for these recording artists to come up with their own beats, lyrics or even vocals? lol I just think if I want to hear something from an older song, I'll go and listen to that song-I don't want to hear it stripped and sold for parts to help make a "new" song lol

I've always looked at sampling as the audio equivalent of the photo collage.

If done intelligently and with some respect for creating something new out of the old, it can be awesome. Unfortunately, it is WAY too often abused as a source for stock music beds rather than occasional riffs, fills and sound bites that make evocative references.

I've discovered a lot of great music from the past through sampling, so I'm not totally against it. I like sampling when it's used sparingly and creatively by building a new song around an element from another. Too often these days, though, producers/songwriters will simply take an old song and put new vocals and lyrics on top of it out of laziness or lack of talent. That's when music and creativity suffers. I'm not so much concerned with sampling in hip-hop/rap, because that's the way it's always been, but rather with R&B, which I think has an obligation to be more original.

I think this clip from a classic, hilarious, but sadly short lived cartoon called Clone High says it best...

I wonder how many people that are anti-sampling shook their azz to EnVogue's "Hold On"..Lauryn Hill's "Killing Me Softly"..and so many other great songs that was sample-driven...To me it's no different than Rock bands borrowing guitar riffs from other songs..alot of people are anti-technology and would prefer to live in an analog world..that sampling debate is an old one, like some peoples thinking

Don't like it. It has opened the door 4 the least talented music creators in the history of music.

I will say that i'm sure there are those that have sampled creatively.
These would be cases where it's not blatantly obviously that a sample was even being used and where it came from.
