Lady Gaga can have all the talent in the world. The machine worked different in 1979.

I actually think her talent has been obscured by her outrageous image.

I agree. Too many external factors in the music biz now seem to create the illusion to some degree that anyone with an ability to dance, strum a guitar, write a song, or shock audiences is "the new _____".

Prince had his influences, but he created something from Dirty Mind through LoveSexy that kept the audiences engaged for almost a decade.

Back to Gaga: She is intriguing to a point, but its all about staying power and reinventing herself album after album to keep the folks entertained.

Your first statement needs attention. Branch out. Dig through the people Prince was influenced by. Go listen to something else besides Prince. It's silly to segregate yourself like that. Don't be shocked when you hear Prince stuff in other people's music that came out BEFORE he did. Just know the truth when you hear it, good or bad.

As far as Caca being a female Prince....girl, I hate to say it, but ni**a please!

lol aiight aiight...just a thought. And it is surprising when I hear Prince in other people's songs... like Beyonce' and others who "try" to do a cover of his songs. Thanks 4 the advice wink

She is a fan, so it's no surprise if you are hearing P in her music. I havent' listened to her material, so can't say myself.

Prince, Bowie who are music Gods. Both were allowed to grow and even fail sometimes. The record co's backed the careers of them. Which is good. You don't want to create an environment where artists/musicians are afraid to take a chance.

If Lady GaGa fails they will likely fade her out quickly.

Some great music/artists are around that were dropped by the majors. They continue to record and release quality stuff quietly. Juliana Hatfield comes to mind.

I myself have recently became a fan of Lady GaGa. She has a great voice, and she can play. I don't see a Prince comparison. But, then again, Prince is NOT the be-all-end-all. Why can't Lady GaGa just be her, without the comparisons? She is a talent, and I can certainly see why she isn't everyone's cup of tea, because I did not care for her at first, but after I got her album, I see why she is gaining popularity. She does not follow the trends, she sets her own rules, like her or not.
She is definitely more talented than Brit, who can't even sing without help from technology, and she is more talented than Miley (even though Miley is way hotter than Gaga), and more bold than Christina Aguilera(though I still love me some Christina, cause she can outsing all of the above).

No way.

I REALLY don't get the fuzz about Lady Gaga.

She might appear more experimental / arty-farty in her presentation (clothing style, make-up, video-images), and she might have a decent singing-voice, but style- and qualitywise her music doesnt differ a lot from the prefab-pop by the likes of Britney Spears, Rihanna and Beyonce.

What strikes me most about her, is that she simply leaves me cold in every way. She and her music lacks 'warmth' and something I can relate to personally. It all sounds very 'cold' and calculated.

To be honest: I think she is really nothing more then a 'product' like Britney and Hannah Montana. People just THINK she isnt, because they are fooling themselves by thoughts like: oooh... she is so different, with her unique style of clothing... and... oooh.. look how daring she is with her video's...
But when you look at the entire picture, and look through the surface, you cannot judge otherwise then that she is a yet another product of the music industry. She simply lacks any kind of authenticity.

i just spent 2 hours this afternoon, watching the "bad romance" video
over and over and over again.

not since "gett off" was released has prince managed to capture my
attention so completely with a video/song combo.

most of my friends can't stand gaga but i think she's great. i love
her influences and where she's coming from. i just totally get it,
and dig it. if i got the chance, and if i had a body like that and
the talent, i'd do the exact same thing.

people think it's a gimmick but i just don't believe that. there are
some people who truly are like that, i know it's honest because i'd
be identical, simply because that's what's inside. not because some
people might say "that shit sells".

Gaga is something else! i believe the hype, Straight outta the gate she's been an amazing musical and visual spectacle.

Prince is just a poorer version of Prince.I don't see why they're being compared.

These people are right: Lady Gaga IS a gimmick.

I really can't believe why some people here who seem to have a rather good taste in 'real' music, think Lady Gaga belongs in that camp.

IMO her visuals are as blatant as the kind of predictable 'shock value' (NOT of course) Marilyn Manson used to offer. And below that visuals lies music that is just as prefab as anything Britney Spears has done. I mean: look at a song like Eh Eh for example, that is just cheap, poorly composed prefab dance-pop.

thus far I like Lady Gaga. She can sing, dance, write, and come up with interesting looks. Are all of them original-no, but no one is ever entirely original these days.

Not everything Prince and Madonna did was originally their idea either.

and I like how Lady Gaga has so much imput on what she puts out...I'd rather hear her than Shitney Spears any day lol

It's hard to compare anyone to Prince because he is accomplished on so many disciplines.

But Lady Gaga is quite excellent on piano, and songwriting, and vocals.

LAWD!! Not this shit again confused

So many people confuse image with artistry. Lady Gaga's music is shit and she tries to push this artsy fartsy image to manipulate people into believing what she's doing is innovative. She favors Madonna more than anyone.

lol I admittedly said that I don't know much about her (aside from what they play OVER and OVER on the radio). Looks like from the video she plays fairly well and has a decent voice...nothing special. A poor version of Alicia Keys perhaps...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I just saw the vid for Bad Romance....ok, it looks like if Alicia Keys and Marilyn Manson had a baby, it would be Lady Gaga...She definately works out her personal promotion machine....lol
