ROLLING STONES - 'GIMME SHELTER' Seeing this song performed recently at the 2-night Rock and Roll Concert has truly set in place what an absolute classic this is. Of course it has been done better live. Ironically it was probably Jagger who was the worst of the artists who performed on stage together. The man just sounds bad live with his rushed vocals. Get it together Mick!
But think of all the movies that have used 'GS' in their soundtracks, especially those made by Scorsese. It has undoubtedly one of the best openings in all of rock music. Perfect song really.

Well, Mick is an old man now but I've heard him sing it live in concert years ago and it blew me away! If you haven't seen it check out the film documentary Gimme Shelter.

There are a few reasons that song is such a powerhouse.
~ The lyric's subject matter ~ The musical track itself rocks and includes another signature guitar riff from Keef. ~ The extraordinary vocals of Merry Clayton. The spots where her voice cracks at 3:00 (shout) & 3:03 (murder) bring the goosebumps to this day. They should've let her sing the whole damn thing... ...Merry Clayton's version. The track isn't as good but her vocals kill. Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I have also heard some say that it is not possible to produce on stage the studio version's sense of dread and storm like atmosphere. However Mick Taylor did perform some amazing solos on 'GS' during the '72-73 live tours(the stones at their apex).

This song is like 8 separate levels of amazing. Everything about it is good.
I hear music like this; amazing sounds that were released years before I was even born, and they still sound fresh and new and exciting to me. Songs like Gimme Shelter are true classics. I wonder what, if anything, being produced lately will hold the same sway? As for Mick's vocals: I didn't see any of this 2 Nights of Rock thing so I can't speak on that but I have heard some impressive live vocals from him before. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

It's too easy to take the producing of a song past the point of no return towards perfection with recording systems these days. Band after band get sucked into that trap where it's not needed and detrimental to THE FEEL. This recording is an example of the right balance of rehearsed but still raw. Crafted but unperfected. That's a beautiful thing. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

That's a beautiful thing. Ditto what you said. A lot of performers fall into the trap of making their songs sound too slick and perfect, and it takes away from the energy of the track. Prince is often guilty of this, unfortunately. One of the biggest strengths IMO of Gimme Shelter -and most Stones tracks, really -is that they're often left just this much unfinished sounding. Can you imagine how different this song would sound if the vocals had been cleaned up and Pro Tooled? [Edited 12/2/09 21:06pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
