Many of Joplin's more well known tunes were R&B covers written by my friend Jerry Ragovoy.

Erma Franklin (Aretha's sister)...

...Piece of My Heart

Garnet Mimms...

...Cry Baby

Howard Tate...

...Get It While You Can

Unfortunately Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) by Lorraine Ellison isn't up on YouTube.

But you can get a feel for her style from the incredible...

...Stay With Me Baby (another Ragovoy tune)

Janis always said that the artists she idolized and tried to emulate were Black singers such as Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Big Mama Thornton, and Odetta. If it wasn't for them, Janis Joplin would never have been heard. But those artists are the ones who should truly be heard for their voices...Because I heard Janis sing, I went out and bought Bessie Smith and Odetta albums at a used record store when I was a teenager and their music blew me away! Too many unappreciated artists which other singers used to gain the limelight...

Me too. By the time I was 12 I was so heavily into Janis I had dreams about her. I tried to copy her vocal style. I love her heart...as I got older I researched who she emulated. She was one of a kind...

I know she gained success by "tributing" (my word) other artists, but she still brought her uniqueness to the music.

That's true. She always credited the singers who inspired her and whose covers she did... But she brought her own raw power to those songs and did it her way!
