Wasn't there a post about Heatwave's "Star Of A Story?" ??? I know I'm not crazy...where did it go?
If it wasn't for that, this wonderful jem of a song would have never been discovered by me a couple days ago! I'm sooooo mad at my cousins for drilling just about every other Heatwave song into my head as a child accept this one.

Hi, David. I listened to George Benson's version, and it was nice but...the Heatwave version just basks in it's own lushness and his doesn't compare IMO. Part of the problem is the mixing in Benson's version. The bassline is one of the best I've EVER heard and it, rightfully, drives Heatwave's version and almost competes with Wilder's voice. In Benson's version, it's pretty much part of the rest of the instrumental. During the chorus Wilder's voice is a little recessed, almost becoming part of the backdrop. It's just what the chorus needed, as the floaty, airy feeling totally climaxes here. In Benson's version, his vocal (though good) is front-and-center on his version. It takes away from the dreaminess of a song that was made to be dreamy. Plus Heatwave's signature strings and vocal layering are just . I can't imagine the songs without those elements...done in the same exact manner. They make it so hard to cover their songs! Overall, Benson's is more pop-like and synthesized while Heatwave's version is more soulful and organic. I think they were going for slightly different effects so it's a matter of preference. I like Benson's voice but it's no contest for me! (I literally can't stop listening to it! I downloaded it *legally*. That's saying something ) [Edited 11/30/09 22:38pm]

Always loved the "haunting sense" of memory in the original. It's one of my favorites from the Wilder / Temperton Camp. Funk Is It's Own Reward

I knew and loved the George Benson version, but I've never heard the original Heatwave version until now. How did I miss this??
