I know that she suffers from depression but I'm not sure about her schizophrenia,,,,and yes, she have custody over her kids.

lol That's only because she knows how to hide from the media; was never really an attention whore; and, doesn't call the photogs and tell them she's going to be at the McDonald's on 5th Avenue in 10 minutes buying a Big Mac combo and a Happy Meal. I hope she does make a comeback to the music biz and to sanity because sanity is the shit when you don't have to be drugged to get it. nod

I surely hope so! I love Lauryn. Definitely in my top fave female artists ever. I don't think her music is the problem really though, I think it's her personal life. If she could just get back on track in her personal life then perhaps she'd be able to focus on her music once again and then she'd be able to make a comeback.

She's just been announced as headlining the raggamuffin festival here in NZ which is very interesting.
Has she performed anywhere else recently?
Wyclef is also playin the festival on the same day, I wonder if they've moved past their differences?

Anyone got any comments on this? It's in February, not far away at all! Has she even performed at all in the last couple of years? Have any of you orgers seen her perform?
I'm almost tempted to go out of town to see her because she's a bit of a lege but reading these comments suggest it has no chance of not being a certain train wreck!

I saw her once for the Miseducation Tour. I was right up front and that chic killed the performance and she looked Beautiful... the crowd was feeling it and she was feeling us. It was at the NJPAC in Newark and it was sold the hell out. Whitney Houston was there with her daughter behind the curtains watching. I could only see because I was so close. I was so hyped after the show because I knew I witnessed something special. Whenever there is some buzz about her appearing somewhere people go nuts. She's definately got the it factor.
With that said, the shock of nothing really coming out after that and the emotional diary she spilled out of her soul with the Unplugged set took everyone for a loop. I was like "what has happened in your life". she look so beat down on that stool. Not ugly just emotionally wrecked. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and still am. One could wish huh! sad

That picture right there tells us she's not well enough to make
a comeback. nuts I heard she wasn't responding well to most meds that
were suspposed to help her in her mental state. We can always
remember the good old days.

I would love to see her make new music. She is so talented.

I'm in my mid-40's and her Miseducation cd is one of my all time favs and has been since it came out. I still listen to it often and love every song.

I believe she's bi-polar. I also believe that her relationship with Mr. Marley has fucked her up pretty bad seeing as he's fathered other children and has had other relationships. I wouldn't be surprised to hear she's suffered post-partum depression too. I think her head is in the clouds and she has lost touch with reality. I hope she will come back at some point, but I kind of doubt it. Good luck to her though.

So I just found out Lauryn's gonna be playing at a local festival. Really I can't not go, right?

Andrew McManus Presents

The Raggamuffin Music Festival is pleased to announce LAURYN HILL will join the 2010 bill.

Lauryn Hill, an American recording artist, musician, producer and actress established her reputation in the hip-hop world as the lone female member of the Fugees. She sang at Harlem's Apollo Theater at age thirteen and soon after met Prakazrel ‘Pras' Michel and his cousin, Wyclef Jean and the three formed the Fugees.

In 1996 the group released their second album which Ms Hill co-wrote and co-produced. The Score sold over 18 million copies, making the Fugees the biggest-selling rap group of all time and winning them two Grammy Awards (Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance by a duo or group).

A few years later after meeting her long-term partner, Rohan Marley son of Bob Marley, Ms Hill launched her solo career and released the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The recording earned her five Grammy Awards and praise from industry heavyweights such as Public Enemy's Chuck D who admiringly described her as "sunlight" and a "Bob Marley (of the) 21st Century".

Ms Hill will perform at Raggamuffin with SLY & ROBBIE.

Also performing is another member of the Fugees WYCLEF JEAN, plus son of Bob Marley JULIAN MARLEY, SHAGGY, SEAN KINGSTON reggae legends STEEL PULSE and NZ's own KATCHAFIRE, SOLA ROSA & IVA LAMKUM, PACIFIC HERBS and SWEET & IRIE.

Over ten hours of funk, dub, hip-hop, soul and of course reggae from four kiwi bands and seven Internationals, resulting in one hot show!

I've never seen this pic. Very very... just... damn. neutral

But when we conjecture "comeback," I think it depends on what we mean by that...

Based on stuff I know only anecdotally ('cause I've never met the woman), I don't think it'd be good for her (and I doubt she has much desire) to find herself back in the spotlight, on the top of the charts, making video after video, touring like mad, on MTV/BET/VH1, on every black hair and fashion magazine cover, in every gossipy music rag, etc. It's a world she could do without.

But if we're asked to imagine a scenario where she -- at her leisure and strictly for the love of making music -- might gradually piece together a phenomenal collection of songs, drop it maybe independently or through some one-off arrangement with a label, maybe do a high-profile appearance here or there, and sink comfortably back into her private world for however long she wants, like, say, Sade, I definitely think she could do that and get a good response.

Nina Simone dealt with mental illness, and she managed to be creative and in relative good health for over 5 decades. I bet it had to do with balance, pace, priorities and a certain level of recognizing herself as decidedly apart from the industry.

I was thinking the samething... biggrin

I don't know what all Ms. Hill issues are but if the music business exaerbates them, the hell with it. Peace of mind is far more important. She can create music anytime and anywhere... in her house, backyard, pick up a guitar, and sing to her chidlren. The music is alway within.

oh...and I think she can make a comeback but just not as big as her solo debut...which is a tall task for anybody that makes it big then takes a break/goes into exile.

I was hopeful after watching her performance with the Fugees on the Dave Chappelle movie Block Party. She sang killing me softly...but then nothing much happened after that. sad I hope she does make a comeback.

My manager used to be an exec at her label and was very involved with both The Fugees and Lauryn's solo career. He still works with Pras, and there's a few pictures in his studio that I've seen with him and Lauryn.

When The Fugees had that reunion a few years ago, he was very involved with that. In fact he played me that "Take It Easy" joint a few weeks or so before anyone had heard it.

I asked him what the plans were and he told me straight up that things were so unstable that they might fall apart at any moment. It was pretty clear that he was talking about Lauryn's mental state. Even he was having difficulty communicating and getting through to her and this is someone that had known and worked with her for years and years.

It's a real shame, but I hope she can get her mind straight sooner or later.

Of course she "can".

But whether she does or not is a different story. The music climate right now is hard enough for acts 'breaking in' let alone making comebacks.

One thing's for sure--it wont' be for lack of talent if she doesn't make it.
