LL Cool J Tupac Notorious BIG Rakim Nas NWA Outkast Jay Z De La Soul Salt & Pepa Public Enemy A Tribe Called Quest Beastie Boys Eminem I doubt De La gets in. Everybody else will. Maybe it's a generational thing but I wouldn't put Jay Z, Biggie, and Eminem in the same league as these legends. Popularity seems to be mistaken for greatness sometimes. Besides, I couldn't put them in before Whodini, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe and Gangstarr. If there were a "Hip Hop Hall of Fame" then Whodini, Kane, Moe Dee, and Gangstarr would be first ballot all the way...But not in the R&R Hall of Fame.... With the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, you had to have crossed over in some major/influential way (artistically or commercially or both)...And as much as I love those acts (Especially Whodini, who doesn't get enough props...And Kane was nasty on the mic...) their influence and impact didn't stretch outside of their hip hop genre.... De La Soul, however, did....They basically were the first "avant garde" hip hop act that received critical love from "rock" critics....They also represent the artistic height of sampling (Prince Paul's and De La's production on 3 Feet High And Rising was simply revolutionary...No one had ever heard anything like it...).. So yeah, De La Soul could get a nod after several tries.... As for Jay, Biggie and even Eminem?.....They may all get in first ballot...I have no beefs with those acts...Nothing wrong with being commercial, that is if you are actually good....lol [Edited 12/6/09 15:34pm]

Yeah, I know Gangstarr has little to no shot of actually getting in. [Edited 12/6/09 15:20pm] I think Gangstarr has a snowball's chance in hell of getting in, but from an artistic (if not commercial) standpoint, I could see an interesting argument for it... or at least for Guru as a solo act. The Heavy Rhyme Experience stuff they did with the Brand new Heavies really seemed to inspire Guru to go the Jazzmatazz route. And the sessions from those projects were both really interesting and pretty influential in bringing together hip hop and live jazz like never before. And even from Gangstarr's first album, they had a decidedly jazz-heavy sound. Even Spike Lee recognized it early on and used them in his Mo Better Blues soundtrack. I'd say they are fairly unsung pioneers. [Edited 12/6/09 15:43pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

DeLa would have a remote chance getting in..they were critically acclaimed and were forefront bringing in the " sampling era"...while others were sampling disco breaks and James brown..they were sampling "the turtles" and Hall and Oates. The committee would consider that and put them in..but after Beastie Boys and Public Enemy..those two should be next

The Fat Boys may have been a "novelty act" for fans deeply into the genre before and after them, but for the world beyond them the Fat Boys were maybe THE introduction to hip hop. They had some of the earliest crossover hits and hip hop covers of old rock standards, mainstream Hollywood movies, even a Saturday morning cartoon. And for many people, they were the introduction not only to rap, but to beatboxing and the whole hip hop aesthetic back then (big glasses, fat laces, letter jackets, bling, etc.). Heck, I think I ever remember them on Donahue! They might have been a joke, but they meant a lot to establishing the genre outside of the underground. [Edited 12/6/09 13:52pm] WORD!! Those three will probably get in. While I wouldn't personally put them in before the aforementioned artists the RRHOF might. It's more about what's captured the attention of non-rap fans than those that actually like and know the genre. De La Soul is a marginal group for me but maybe they will get love too.
