I have two of her albums - Cruel Inventions and The Indescribable Wow. I like them, but they've never completely bowled me over or changed my life or anything. I do really like the production & arrangements on Cruel Inventions. I sort of have a bit of a mental block when it comes to enjoying female singer-songwriter types, however, so I'm really not the proper authority when it comes to judging her stuff.

She's woefully underrated. Her last full length album, 2008's Don't Do Anything was such a gift.

Sam is quite talented and quite underappreciated. Been listening to her since '84, when she was a CCM artist using her real name, Leslie Phillips. She was fairly big on the CCM scene back then. As with most Contemp Christian singers at that time, she was pushed to sound current (new wave-ish pop in '84 - apparently her label wanted to push her as the Christian Cindi Lauper). Her last album as Leslie (The Turning - 1987, produced by T-Bone Burnett) was where she finally found her sound (musically and lyrically). By then, she reportedly had had enough with CCM's machine. So she moved to the secular market and changed to her nickname, Sam. Her first album as Sam is still one of my favorites -- The Indescribable Wow (1989), although I still think Martinis and Bikinis is her best work. You really can't go wrong with most, if not all of her work with her ex-husband (T-Bone Burnett). That's pretty much every album from '89 through '04. And I was quite surprised that her first self-produced album "Don't Do Anything" from last year stands with her best from the T-Bone years. It's good to see her still producing great work.
