Jill Scott OK, so I'm a big, big fan of her debut album. The importance she gives to her lyrics is mainly why I adore the music on there.
Usually, when I listen to an album by an artist I never listened to before I get very interested in the rest of their work. I haven't been able to do that with Jill Scott. It sounds stupid, but I'm kind of scared of not liking her other albums So, I guess the point of my thread is to ask those who love her music (and if you don't and all you have to say is how boring she is or how much you hate her, please fuck off) how you feel about the rest of her work. Is it as intense as her debut? Which do you think is her best album? Why? That's all.

I agree that her debut is so strong, it's gonna be hard to beat. I loved the live album, but that was also of cuts from the first album I do like her 2nd album a lot & spun it regularly. 3rd album has been the most hit/miss to date, but still had some strong cuts - the ones I like I really like, & there's some I skip completely b/c they're such standard R&B fare. But overall I'm happy w/ her output. & if I'm ever feeling gaffled by the albums, I just look to the live stuff - "You Got Me" from Dave Chappelle's Block Party is always enough to set me straight She's dope, she'll get back to a cut for cut album - I'm gonna keep believing

I am a big fan of Jill Scott's work and with every release so far in her career, she has constantly impressed me. I remember back in the summer of 2000 when her debut album dropped, I would play that cassette tape from beginning to end because the soulfulness, sultry style, and rawness that Jill delivered intrigued me. I still think that it is her best album, but all of her albums (including the live/studio album Experience 826+) are excellent. If you are looking for something that is quite close to the sound of her debut album, I would suggest checking out her latest release, The Real Thing. It has a bit of an erotic nature to it, but it still captures that rawness that was felt on the first album Who Is Jill Scott. The sophomore album Beatifully Human was lush and more worldly, but it was missing some of that intensity of the debut. Check me out and add me on:

I was going to say just about all of this. I loved her first, really like the live... cooled on the 2nd, but I love the 3rd. I always say, "Jill Scott is the TRUTH"! I love her music. "Love Hurts. I am a big fan of her debut.
Didn't really like her softmore effort - so i stopped there.

Collaborations is the weakest thing she's put out.
First album is great. Experience is a pretty good live album, and the 2nd disk of unreleased stuff is good. I liked Beautifully Human. I used that phrase in various sig files for a year or two after that. The Real Thing was a bit weaker to me. I loved "Golden", but the rest left me feeling a bit wanting. I haven't heard the Live In Paris+ album. She's due to have a remix album out soon, I think.

Remember, he 2nd real album, if you're wanting studio work, is Beautifully Human. Experience is a live CD and outtakes. I think it had one new song on it that was released as a single, and the live version of "He Loves Me" was released as a single (both with videos) as well. They're all numbered Words and Sounds Vol 1, 2, and 3.

Did you watch "The Ladies' Detective Agency"? That's the one she was great in Tyler Perry had her overacting in his movie, but he seems to move every actor in that direction - even good ones

I love my some Jilly!
Her Live in Paris DVD is OFF THE CHAIN. I would go to her 3rd release, next. The Real Thing. Skip over Beautifully Human. Beautifully Human is beautiful but...a bit dull. Rolling Stone said it best - sounds like she was still on the beach sipping a margarita when she wrote those songs. The Real Thing best tracks: The Real Thing Hate on Me Come See Me Crown Royal My Love All I Breathe I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Jill needs to stick to 10 songs per album. It will limit her creativity and force her to focus on theme and song order.
There's just too much random to wade through on her albums. The quality level of songs fluctates. Just when you get into the groove on a great song, a mediocre song comes behind it. I hate to recommend this, because I'm not a big fan of the move to singles over albums, buuuutt.. I would do a listen through of each album online and only purchase the songs that move you. Still, she's an amazing live performer. If you have the opportunity, purchase tickets to see her live.

Alej, you know I love me some Jill Scott! L.O.V.E. Ms. Scott.
The first time I heard 'Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 was in Conconut Records in Hyde Park-Chicago, the same week her album was release, the 3rd week in July. I stayed in that store from the first cut till the last, couldn't believe my ears. I then went around the corner to Dr. Wax and bought the Cd for $13.64. "Who's IS Jill Scott?" debut showcased a gifted lyricists, who was able to inject humor wrapped up in a sensuous, relatable storytelling. A lot people said they couldn't feel her sophomore effort, 'Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2' but I thought it was a fitting album, a continous to Vol. 1. My favorite cuts from the 2nd album "Golden", "Cross My Mind", "Talk To Me", "Famliy Reunion", and "Rasol". The third album "The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3" was hit and miss. I wished Ms. Scott and her team had the forsight to refine some cuts and disgard others outright. I enjoyed "Hate On Me" and "Crown Royal" ... which should have been a full length song. At others have mentioned, she must been seen live, digital recording doesn't do the this Sista justice. Big fan of her film work as well (I don't watch Mr. Perry's films) but I first saw her in Showtime's movie with "Cavedwellers", starring Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. OK. I've gushed enough. ===== [Edited 1/3/10 14:40pm]

Jill Scott live is all that!
I saw Jill Scott during her first tour, and I was blown away. I got tickets to the show for her last album, but had to have surgery. I sold them to a friend and her date, and wanted to when I saw her in the concert shirt. **I had seen her perform at a spoken word program in Newark, NJ before she was famous. She was the headliner, but was really late (traffic coming up from Philly). She came running in with a big purse, dumped it out, and popped in a tape of music. She sang, recited some of her poetry... I remember thinking that that chick was awesome! The next thing you know, I recognized her on TV. nostalgia edit [Edited 1/3/10 14:48pm] "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. OK so I listened to the whole thang. It certainly isn't as strong and solid as her debut - but I did listen to it only once, I do remember listening to Vol. 1 several times before actually loving it. However, I think it's a really strong album in its own way. I loved it

To me, her debut is her strongest. But just because the sophomore is a B+ don't mean it aint gonna smack that Mexican ass with ferver I love Beautifully Human and, The Real Thing is lacking for me but there are excellent cuts on everything she's put out. I adore her. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Jilly from Philly!
I don't listen to her 2nd album as much as the 1st, but I still really enjoy it. "Not Like Crazy" and "Cross My Mind" are my favorites. Her 3rd album some really good material too. "Wanna Be Loved" is the best! How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

Bought her debut on a whim the week it came out (because it was new & looked "interesting")....bout took my head OFF. I remember feeling sorry for her @ the time because any debut THAT strong can't be topped.
The efforts that followed have some gems....but can't touch that ASTONISHING fisrt effort. That sucka spun in my deck (to the exclusion of all else) for a solid nine months. I can't remember any other debut ever having that effect on me. Her only UNFORGIVABLE crime? "Crown Royal" clockin in at 1:48....WTF were they THINKIN????? Also worthy of mention is a colabo on Cornell West's '07 album "A Journey Of Revelations"....she has a track on that one called "What Time It Is".....straight up JAM, IMHO. Jill
some guy who was trying to impress me with his muscical knowledge asked me one day at work if I had heard of Jill Scott. I said Who is Jill Scott? and he said exactly, smiled and walked away. About 3 weeks later I was in the PX and saw "Who is Jill Scott" and picked it up because I loved what I had read about her and Hidden Beach. I owe that guy the world because she is second only to Erykah for me. I played that cd to death, so much so that both my children STILL know every word to that one I just joined the Lilith fair facebook page just because of Erykah and Jill. I have never seen her live, this is my mission for 2010. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

I bought it strictly based on the title alone. I saw that and thought well, who is Jill Scott? Had to find out I bought "I Am Shelby Lynne" based on the same rationale. Such a declaration needed to be explored! It ain Jill but damn, that album is the bomb too 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740
