Jimi Hendrix...........I finally get it! Okay,
I've never been a Jimi fan and just basically never understood the magic that people have applied 2 him all of these years. Thee only album he made that I like is the Blues joint. Long story short, I watched a documentary of Jimi this past weekend of his first big gig in the U.S. the Monterey Music Fest in 1966. All I can say is WOW..... How in the hell did I MISS that 4 all of these years? Needless 2 say, I have some catching up 2 do.

He was the first 2 admit that he couldn't sing but he sang songs that suited his voice, like George Clinton did, like Bob Dylan did and dare I say it... Like James Brown did. I truly believe his rough vocals gave his music a raw edge that was just awesome.

One mistake (that your comment reminded me to correct) is that Dave Mason did not play bass on the final version All Along The Watchtower. Dave Mason did play bass for a few takes when Noel Redding walked out. However it's Jimi's bass track that made the final cut. People said that all James Brown could do was scream, to which he replied "I might be yellin and screamin, but I'm yellin and screamin in KEY" With rock n roll or any othe genre of music, it don't matter if you're pitch perfect, off key or a little bit behind the beat,it's your attitude and creativity that make the music what it is. Not one of these legends would win the X-Factor and as that seems 2 be the only way in2 the music business these days, how many legends are we missing out on in favour of these polished pop tarts? Sickening thought huh?

* I'm including this post because you asked the question: How many legends might we be missing out on? 40 years later I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not going to see Jimi when I had the chance in Chicago in May of '69. I had just found out that I was going to Viet Nam and I was in a bummed out mood. Now I live in Santa Fe, NM and have regular chances to see this kid (Friday's his 22nd birthday) Ryan McGarvey play Hendrix songs as good as Jimi did his bad self back in the day. I hope its not sacrilege to say that on this thread but until you experience him you just don't know. Hmmmm... Jimi's been dead more than 22 years. if I didn't believe in reincarnation before I think Ryan represents a strong case for its existence. There's all sorts of Youtube vids of him playing Hendrix songs (including his own tribute tune called Hey Jimi) but unfortunately the sound quality sux on em all. His MySpace page has good quality tunes from his own CD which of course displays his virtuosity but they aren't Hendrix covers. I think you'll get the idea though. This kid deserves to be known but it will be hard for him to have to deal with all the comparisons to carve out his own territory in the guitar legend genre. http://www.myspace.com/ryanmcgarvey [Edited 11/11/09 23:28pm]

I also just began to really appreciate him recently.... I think his vocals used to put me off too! But when I first heard and saw 'Machine Gun' it blew me away, truly amazing! And I LOVE his style, now I've even got a really great framed pic of him up on my wall!! I can see how unique and ground breaking he was, I think it takes time ...

You really have to remember the time in which he was in. In the 60's, nobody had ever seen someone play a guitar like that, many people said he was so good he was frightening. Not only with the guitar - the production was very cutting edge with the use of effects, panning & the like. The same goes for the Beatles & other 60's artists who are now said to be over-rated because in comparison to todays artists they may not be as jaw droppingly spectacular - but back then they were like something from another world~ (Although I'm only speculating because I'm 18 but I'm pretty sure that's the case lol)
Also I think Jimi is a cool vocalist, sure he may not be the best "singer" but his vocals in general are awesome in my opinion.
