Death Row doesn't own the rights to this song. RCA does. It was licensed to Death Row for the soundtrack release (same for Warren G's Regulator").

I know that. I'm talking about the means in which he got that license. Have a read up of Ronin Ro's "Have Gun Will Travel: The Spectacular Rise and Violent Fall of Death Row Records"

This song was released as the lead single for the soundtrack to the movie "Above The Rim", in which Tupac played the character of "Birdie". It's why 'Pac is in the video.

Anyway the soundtrack was put together by Suge and released on Death Row Records. If you read the history of DRR you'll see that Suge pulled some shady manoeuvres in order to get the license to this song.

I prefer this version...This version was just so laid back...

What do you mean, license? And when wasn't/isn't Suge doing shady shit? It's not like he takes a vacation from the evilness. He don't go on holiday.

Well Death Row didn't own the song, so they had to do what's called a licensing deal to put the song on their soundtrack. And yeah of course Suge is always doing shady shit, but I seem to remember there being a particular story surrounding this song.

I love that. I remember I bought the 'Above The Rim' soundtrack just listening to that song and that's how I discovered 'Regulate'. Btw was that a good movie? I never saw it. And why there is not a film forum on the site?

I love this one, too. Actually listening to a song from their Christmas CD (which ended up being their last release).

I used to play this version a lot. I wish this version would have been on the album.

Does anyone know if this was the first time an interlude was turned into a hit record?
