Is it too soon to consider Amel Larrieux one of the greats? Hands down, I think her voice is tops-I think she could be the next Sade if she went about it right "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I think she's one of the greats! Her voice is incredible. She reminds me of Syreeta and Minnie and Beyonce of all people (her tone sometimes, the vibrato). Soft, delicate, precise...but she can blow when she wants to. I like how she plays with volume when she sings like Nancy Wilson. She's unique...I can instantly recognize her. I own all of her stuff, including Groove Theory. Orange Glow was tight! I'm still waiting for that to appear on an album.
Her cover of Sophisticated Lady is great too! I also love her lyrics and love the fact that she doesn't work with outside producers. She has her own vibe. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

She does have her own vibe. She and Norah Jones sound a bit similar to me. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

You don't think Norah and Amel sound similar? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I can kinda see why you think that, but really no. And Yes, it's too soon to consider Amel one of the greats. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

i think being a "great" is so subjective and such a personal opinion that you can't really reach consensus until an artist's career has been over for awhile...the exceptions tend to be iconic game changers (ie, mj, elvis, the beatles) that there's little room to argue against them...but when we are dealing with obsure artist with very little record sales...well, time will tell. I'm a HUGE and I mean HUGE amel appreciator.
I adore all of her work. I can't even to begin how much I literally died over her 1st album! Bravebird was equally fantastic. Morning was the shyt! Then, Lovely Standards BLEW me away. Her voice is therapeutic! Who cannot adore her. And, I REALLY wish some people would STOP comparing her to Sade because there is NO comparison for they are two different types of singers. Sade has her groove and Amel has her groove. If you guys aren't a member of her Official Website please join here: http://www.blisslife.com and the correct link to her message board is here: http://blisslife.com/msgforum/ Did you guys here a lot of her collaborations! She's worked with Stanley Clark, Glenn Lewis, Sweetback, The Roots, and so many others. She may not be well known in the mainstream crowd but she has a core group of supporters. She choose to be independent and not deal with the bureaucy of the major label. Have you guys heard her singles that came out last year: Orange Glow Don't Let Me Down Amazing! Be glad and rejoice for the Lord has done marvelous things!

She's good, I love some of her music, and some of it I can't get into...but I don't think she should be considered one of the greats yet though. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Good Lord, she's boring I know she has an audience but I'll never really understand it - it's like having a gang of butterflies lull you to sleep She'll never be one of the greats imo

dont you have to be at least successful and have classic songs that crossed over to be considered great

I don't want to sound argumentative, but I wonder why folks keep asking about artists with such small bodies of work and early in their careers being "greats" or "legends". Don't we have to wait and see?

She's a great vocalist, but if nobody is considering Shanice to be one of the greats than, unfortunately Amel won't be considered either. Love them both, but Shanice outsings Amel hands down...hell, she outsings most of the female artists who are uber-popular now and being considered great for some oddball reason. Prince Rogers Nelson

Amel and Shanice are different singers (in my humble opinion).
Amel to me is softer in her presentation. Shanice BOOMS. When either one has songs that compliment their octave range then they are great. However, I think with amel one of the things that has surprised me is all of the duets she has done. If you check a few of the threads on http://www.blisslife.com about her collaborations I think you will be surprised at how many she has done and continues to do. The appeal though for me about amel is that I was so SHOCKED that when I saw her live how much BETTER she sounds than on her studio album. I honestly was blown away. Although I was a supportive fan before I saw her in concert I kind of went BONKERS after I saw her live and ever since that performance I have been going to her shows in New York when she performs. Seriously if she is in your city, state or country and you want to check her out. Please do. Her concerts are affordable and not over priced. But, I respect all of your opinions here on her because that's the beauty of music where we all find those artists that we adore. Such as my appreciation with PRINCE. By the way, Amel told me that she performed at Paisley Park for Prince. AHHH! Be glad and rejoice for the Lord has done marvelous things!
