Featuring performances from two groundbreaking concerts held Oct. 29 and 30 at Madison Square Garden, the special is anchored by iconic musicians that include Jeff Beck Band, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Aretha Franklin, Metallica, Paul Simon/Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, U2 and Stevie Wonder. Other HBO playdates: Dec. 16 (2:15 a.m.), 20 (11:30 a.m.), 24 (10:15 p.m.) and 28 (midnight) HBO2 playdates: Nov. 30 (9:00 p.m.) and Dec. 5 (12:35 a.m.), 18 (10:00 p.m.) and 30 (2:00 p.m.) THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME CONCERT will also be presented in two parts of two hours apiece. HBO playdates for Part 1: Dec. 3 (9:00 p.m.), 8 (2:00 p.m., 11:30 p.m.) and 12 (6:00 p.m.) HBO playdates for Part 2: Dec. 4 (9:00 p.m.), 9 (2:00 p.m., 11:30 p.m.) and 13 (6:00 p.m.) HBO2 playdate for Part 1: Dec. 22 (12:30 p.m.) HBO2 playdate for Part 2: Dec. 23 (12:30 p.m.) The live concerts celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The two nights featured different lineups, with artists performing their own songs and the music that inspired them - tracing the history of genres ranging from soul to hard rock. Each of the artists overseeing a different segment of the concerts was joined by special guests to create unique performances. Guests included Black Eyed Peas, Jackson Browne, Ray Davies, Dion, John Fogerty, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Billy Joel, B.B. The 2 shows over two nights was edited down to 4 hours by HBO. There remains over 5 hours of music on the cutting room floor. There is speculation that at some point the entire event will be released on dvd as a 3 set collection.
The concerts raised 5 million dollars for the R&RHOF Foundation. The promoters tried to get The Rolling Stones, but Mick Jagger stated that was impossible to put together, so he showed up as a guest in the U2 set. Additional wanted acts were: Led Zeppelin (they declined to reform), Aerosmith to jam with Metallica (the Boston act was in Dubai and couldn't change that date); Little Richard (he had recent ip eplacemnt surgery); Fats Domino and Chuck Berry (both didn't want to travel to NY); Neil Young, had to renige at the last minute due to a family emergency; and then there were the two major problems that happened at the last minute: [i]Eric Clapton cancelled on October 22nd, due to gall bladder surgery; and Aretha Franklin threatened to be a no-show over air-condtioning (there could be none and even the ducts in her dressing room had to be covered with cardboard). Additionally she wanted Chinese food in her dressing room at the last minute. Promoters scrambled and got Jeff Beck to pinch hit as a headliner for the ailing Clapton. Beck was already on tap to guest in Eric's set - but aseembling his touring band was not easy at the last minute. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta was in LA, as was Miss Tal Wilkenfeld the bass guitarist (doing a workshop). They had one full day of rehearsal, and Jeff Beck pulled double duty, rehearsing uptown with Stevie Wonder (on "Supersition"), and then in Manhattan with his band and special guests Sting, Buddy Guy and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Aretha also created headaches by not following through on her set list as she had promised the promoters she would do nothing but the hits, and oddly did an instrumental intro of "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" as her set opener that segued into "Baby, I Love You", and she also did "Make Them Hear You" (from RAGTIME), and "New York, New York", the standard Broadway tune. Additionally the promoters were less than pleased with her lack of interaction with her special guests at rehearsals (Annie Lennox on "Chain Of Fools" and Lenny Kravitz on "Think"). Many people have wondered why she and Lennox did not reprise their 1985 hit duet "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves". [Edited 11/23/09 13:00pm] Music Royalty in Motion | |
