Okay,
I've never been a Jimi fan and just basically never understood the magic that people have applied 2 him all of these years. Thee only album he made that I like is the Blues joint.

Long story short, I watched a documentary of Jimi this past weekend of his first big gig in the U.S. the Monterey Music Fest in 1966. All I can say is WOW.....
How in the hell did I MISS that 4 all of these years?

Needless 2 say, I have some catching up 2 do.

I have 2 say though.....I've come around on the guitar playing, but that guy absolutely cannot sing.

I truly believe his rough vocals gave his music a raw edge that was just awesome.

One mistake (that your comment reminded me to correct) is that Dave Mason did not play bass on the final version All Along The Watchtower. Dave Mason did play bass for a few takes when Noel Redding walked out. However it's Jimi's bass track that made the final cut.

40 years later I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not going to see Jimi when I had the chance in Chicago in May of '69. I had just found out that I was going to Viet Nam and I was in a bummed out mood.

Now I live in Santa Fe, NM and have regular chances to see this kid (Friday's his 22nd birthday) Ryan McGarvey play Hendrix songs as good as Jimi did his bad self back in the day.

I hope its not sacrilege to say that on this thread but until you experience him you just don't know.

Hmmmm... Jimi's been dead more than 22 years. if I didn't believe in reincarnation before I think Ryan represents a strong case for its existence.

There's all sorts of Youtube vids of him playing Hendrix songs (including his own tribute tune called Hey Jimi) but unfortunately the sound quality sux on em all.

His MySpace page has good quality tunes from his own CD which of course displays his virtuosity but they aren't Hendrix covers.

I think you'll get the idea though. This kid deserves to be known but it will be hard for him to have to deal with all the comparisons to carve out his own territory in the guitar legend genre.

You really have to remember the time in which he was in. In the 60's, nobody had ever seen someone play a guitar like that, many people said he was so good he was frightening. Not only with the guitar - the production was very cutting edge with the use of effects, panning & the like. The same goes for the Beatles & other 60's artists who are now said to be over-rated because in comparison to todays artists they may not be as jaw droppingly spectacular - but back then they were like something from another world~ (Although I'm only speculating because I'm 18 but I'm pretty sure that's the case lol)

Also I think Jimi is a cool vocalist, sure he may not be the best "singer" but his vocals in general are awesome in my opinion.
