NEW YORK – Chaz Bono says beginning the sex-change process to turn him from a woman to a man is "the best decision I've ever made."

The 40-year-old writer, activist and reality-TV star, who was born a girl to Sonny Bono and Cher, says he's eight months into the years-long transformation and says he feels great.

Formerly called Chastity, he told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday: "Life is short and life is precious. This is who I am. I need to finally be who I am."

Bono says he always felt like a boy growing up and came out as a lesbian 11 years ago. Now he's undergone gender-reassignment surgery and hormone therapy.

He tells ABC: "To me, gender is between your ears, not between your legs. I've felt male as far back as I can remember."

She has completed it.

I believe, legally, he is a male at this point. I forget if he's had the mastectomy, but he probably has. I don't think he's planning on having the penal construction, which is a difficult, and risky surgery. And it's not always long lasting either.

I saw a clip of him on some TV show and was surprised just how deep his voice had gotten.

Just as a declaration: THE PENIS IS A WONDERFUL THING, and isn't easily just 'created'. hehe

It's an interesting discussion. I am gay and loved playing with my sister's dolls when I was a kid, but I never felt like a girl on the inside. I felt like me. I was a boy who liked dolls. It's not that deep.

As long as she is happy she should do whatever she chooses to do.

You're way behind on this. This is old news. The sex change already happened.

To address Scriptgirl's response of "it's over", it's not. Chaz has only been on hormone therapy for 8 months, and it's a 4-5 year process to FULLY get where he needs to be.

I'm happy for Chaz. Transgender issues are real. Barbara Walters had a special on this couple years ago with children who were dealing with these issues. They spoke of those born with female and male genitals and there is a connection. That some are born into the wrong body.

ugghh i don't understand why people do this,she's still gonna be a woman inside. there are somethings that aren't meant to be changed. she can act like a man without a penis.
