Roger Troutman NewsFlash!

Okay. I have a friend who will remain nameless. He was very good friends with Roger. After Roger died he got a phone call from a woman in St. Louis. She told him that Roger said if anything should happen to me call this guy. She did and arranged for Rogers belongings to be sent to him. There was a minidisc that had a project called United We Funk. I dont know if you guys had heard of this supergroup or not. It consisted of Roger, Charlie Wilson, Michael Cooper and Felton from Con Funk Shun, Skip from the Dazz BAnd, Larry Dotson from the Barkays, Mary Davis from SOS and mother funkin Rick James! I heard every track and it is smoking! Unbelievable. It was definetly not a demo. It was mastered down and everything. When Roger died the project never saw the light of day. I heard this shit almost an hour ago. When I say it is hot, it is hot. Charlie? Larry? Michael Cooper? Rick JAmes? How can you go wrong? He was making me a copy and on track six the recorder jack messed up. Oh well. I will have it tomorrow. LOL!

Roger, Uncle Charlie and Rick James?

Daaaaamn.... I've got to hear this, for real. Is it all original material, or are there any covers?

Seriously, if this is out and about, I hope someone leaks it or shares it somehow.

"United We Funk".....was released in '04.....a compilation of the players mentioned (and their bands) live.

Not sure if this is the same project of which you speak.....

but there was a release....

Thanks, Cin.....ups.

As far as Rick on this, I think I can say, you dint miss anything. It's a very weak track & kinda "sad" to hear him at that point in his career.

as for the original subject here, I find it "intriguing" that Roger MAY have had personal recordings from an earlier stage in the project.

If so.....if you get such things, Dayton.....PLEASE mail me.....would LOVE to hear the work if it's out there.

Hey Cinnie, that was it! I was trippin'when I heard it. I just love it. When I heard it I asked my dude, how in the fuck this wasn't released? Leave it to Rhino to release it. Yeah, the tabledance was on it. If you listen to it all you can tell Roger produced it. It was well known that Roger would get the production deals with Warner Bros back in the day and release some shit that was clearly a write off. Remember Lynch? LOL!

I knew if anybody heard of it, the Org would. You guys are the best! It is definetly a must have for the collection!

Again, how in the hell we havent heard about this, I will never know.

Here is some cool Dayton shit. Tomorrow, I will be in the studio with Sugarfoot and Steve Arrington. Will take pictures if they dont mind.

Now you do know that the UWF all stars released an album of new material
in 1999. I actually had that cd since then. Yes Rick had a song called
Table Dance, Barkays had I Like the Way you Shake,Confunkshun had
Shake it Easy, and new material from the Dazz Band,S.O.S band, and the System.
They released the live cd in 2000. The UWF band consisted of some of the
members you mentioned already. Roger was to have been a part of the
tour before his death.

Dawg, you got to met Sugarfoot?! eek biggrin Oh shit, player...Sugarfoot, now THERE is a legend. An all time fave. What do you think of his solo album that Roger was on? A lot of people don't like it but I do. As far as Roger, man...another Legend. One of the best. The thing I always try to hip some people to is that Roger was such a cold blooded lead guitarist. Something that didn't get showcased that much. But anyone who has ever seen Roger/Zapp live knows that Roger could blast on the axe. Love Roger deeply.

I have some incredible outtakes and alternate versions of tracks from "Zapp II", as I knew someone high up in Warners at the time. There's a ridiculous 10 minute unedited version of "So Ruff So Tuff", which the album version was edited down from.

Ahhhh, the SugarKiss album. Now that was a nice album. I really love "I will be Your Star" off of that album. Yeah, that was one of those albums that Roger was getting that production deal money off of and putting it in his construction business. (Listening to Larry's dumb ass). It was crazy how they was on top for a sec but was ripping everyone off. One of my friends named Tim Abrams played guitar for New Horizons and told me the story how Larry had them wear a jeri curl wig for the album cover and he refused. Oh I got so many stories about the Dayton scene! One thing that I will say, it was nothing for Larry to threaten to kill his brothers. That is why Roger sneaked when he doing side jobs because he got tired of carrying the load. The day Larry shot Roger, Larry called a meeting for all of the brothers to be there. The brothers knew better. Roger went. The rest is history. Yeah, he had some guitar chops. Very talented individual. One thing about growing up in Dayton was that there were so many groups that were signed to major labels that no one was star struck. It was common. Either your cousin was in a group, your boyfriend was in a group, your daddy was in a group. At one point I think there were 13 groups from Dayton signed to major labels. What really brought the walls tumbling down was greed, cocaine and the mafia. Another story.

Well I heard Roger got tired of carrying everybody and putting Larrys name on the publishing and was going to tell him that his manager services were no longer needed. I could be wrong.

Me three! I'm a huge fan, an extended version of that would be the JAMMMMM!!

For my fellow Zapp fans, there is also an extended version of "California Love" that was only ever issued on one promo vinyl, where Roger's talkbox outro goes on for another 20 seconds than in the version that everyone knows. I wish I had it, a friend of mine played it to me once.

Out here in L.A, when the song first hit, they played that song non stop. Sometimes, the version you're describing, used to get played as well.

Don't waste your money. I bought it when it released and every single track on it is absolutely horrible. Every track is sellout midtempo current sounding with the shit hop drum machines. If you like the horrible sounding songs on Rick James' last album or the new tracks on the last Morris Day album in the 2000s you might like it.

However, there is a "United We Funk Allstars" live album that is great.
Andy is a four letter word.
