MJ was the first black artist to get HEAVY ROTATION on MTV. Then they started to do the same for Prince and others like Run DMC. MJ's label pushed for MJ's videos to get played more on there and that led to the change so bboy87's right. Remember what Rick said? "A lot of Black asses are going to come together and explode on MTV," James said in 1983. "There are no Blacks on MTV's program list except for Tina Turner, and she stopped being Black about 10 years ago. MTV puts on little White punk groups who don't even have record deals. Blacks are missing exposure and sales." "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

That's why TBS started to create music video shows that more than anything had black artists on heavy rotation more often than MTV did.

That's MTV's problem. Of course it may have been true that MTV did wanna play "Billie Jean" but at the same time they weren't initially willing to play him ALL THE TIME. That's why Walter told them "I'm gonna tell the media that you won't play videos from a fucking black guy and take all my artists out of your shitty channel!" Walter was about to go to town on MTV's ASS! That's when they started to play "Beat It" on and on and "Billie Jean" on and on...

Why making a big deal of first playing on MTV? Back then MTV was a small new station. If anything, MTV rode on MJ to become big, and then made MJ even bigger (he was already big before MTV).
MJ made R&B and Soul dominant in 80s. He will be remembered for that.

'Michael Jackson's This Is It' DVD To Hit Shelves On January 26 Concert documentary will feature an hour of extra footage on DVD, even more on Blu-Ray. First, Michael Jackson fans couldn't wait for the "Michael Jackson's This Is It" documentary to begin its limited run in theaters around the globe. Then, even before it hit thousands of screens, they began clamoring for a DVD release date of the final artistic statement from the self-proclaimed King of Pop. That wish was granted over the Thanksgiving weekend, when Sony Pictures announced that "This Is It" will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on January 26. According to Home Media Magazine, the DVD version will include an hour of extra footage in the form of featurettes on the making of the film, costumes, dancer auditions and the performers' memories of Jackson. The Blu-Ray will contain that footage, plus an additional half hour that includes alternate versions of videos of "Smooth Criminal" and "Thriller." "This Is It" was originally scheduled for a two-week limited run in theaters, with hopes of a DVD version in stores by Christmas. But due to the popularity of the movie and complaints from theater owners that the Christmas release window was too soon, the run was extended by a month and the DVD release was pushed back, according to the Los Angeles Times. The film has taken in more than $70 million at the U.S. box office since opening on October 28. In other "This Is It" news, the film did not make it onto the short list of 15 films eligible for Best Documentary Oscar nominations, because it was not released before the September 30 deadline for that category. But it is reportedly still a potential contender in other categories, including Best Picture. Source: MTV "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

bboy87 said: Michael was the first black artist on MTV to get regular rotation Heavy is more accurate. And yeah, I never disputed that. It's just that over the years the fact has had a sort of "chinese whispers" effect and many people incorrectly state that he was the first. I think even MTV themselves at one point stated it. It makes for great PR but sadly untrue. |

Did you guys see my earlier post about the music video for "This Is It"? I swear it's a different mix of the song than the album versions. |
