Me'Shell: Comfort Woman

I gotta admit I'm totally, inexcusably late to the Me'Shell Ndegeocello party. I remember buying Comfort Woman shortly after it came out but I couldn't get into it. Today, one of the songs came up randomly on my iTunes and I shot to attention. Then I had to listen to the entire album...it's brilliant, and I can't believe this wonderful album has been sitting here, in my possession, all this time while I've been ignoring it.

Feel free to chastise this horrible error on my part while sharing your own love for this album...and then please tell me which Me'Shell album should be next on my list to get.

It's her "warmest" album, to me. I love "Love Song" and "Liliquoi Moon."

this is the only proper album by her that I never warmed to upon its release and still haven't in the years since. there are some that I've cooled on since they came out (Plantation Lullabies, Cookie) and some that started out strong and have stayed that way or grown even stronger (Peace Beyond Passion, Bitter, The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams, Devil's Halo).

but Comfort Woman... never dug it. still don't. and I've tried. it's kind of spaced out to the point of completely losing its center to me.

besides her debut, it's the one i listen to the least (all though i think a couple of the songs on it are among her best). it just sounds like she smoked too much weed while making it or wants you to be smoking weed while listening...either way, it's a loss for me. :lol;

Cookie was an interesting album when it came out. I've not given Comfort Woman a good listen yet.

God hate me....I KNOW how much love there is on the Org for "Bitter".....but it's on my worst albums EVER list.

I LOVED her early work.....especially "Peace Beyond Passion".....but her lastest shit....."Cookie" excepted.....has just eluded me.

She was here in Portland this last year & I wanted to go SO BAD.....I know that at her WORST...she's the shizz. Just had to bang my head on the desk.....just dint have the money at the time.

Anyway, just my .02. She's always ALWAYS worthy of respect....but NOT always the jam.

yeah yeah.....outta respect for the Mods.....I'll spin it ONE more time. I still say it sux.

"Plantation" & "Peace Beyond" are at least albums ANYONE could enjoy. "Bitter" is tougher.

I'll give it another shot.

Alrighty then.....I did it.....spun it again.....and ALSO her brand new one "Devil's Halo".

They both fuckin SUCK. I fear that I must agree with sos here.....too much weed. It's ruining her vision, I think.

Admittedly, I'm in the same camp with Andy & Soul..,.....we come from a dif time when cerebral crap took a second seat to ASS SHAKING.....call me superficial, but if you watch the clips of Meshelle on YouTube.....her on bass?????

I'll take that over the emotional hyperbole of "Bitter" any day. Just feels better.

I'll step up to the plate and LOVE on this beautiful creation! love Went to an instore appearance at Ameoba in LA when this was released and she was gonna DJ but said phuc it, and played the album instead. Gave her more time to interact with the fans who came to see her.

This, to me, is the flipside of Bitter. As personal, but coming from devotional fulfillment instead of a painful void. I love this album immensely.

Comfort Woman is my 2nd favorite under Devils Halo. Bitter is my 3rd favorite of hers. I was late 2 the Meshell party when I finally got in2 her catalog after Cookie came out. And 2 this day, outside of about 4 songs I find Plantation Lullabies 2 be a very weak record. I don't see what the big fuss was/is about that cd. But Comfort Woman? Brilliant cd! And a great mood setting/love making cd as well wink

Had to "be there" for "Plantation"....and I think it "registers" more with us old school funk people.

I maintain that "Peace Beyond" is her best record tho.....remember feeling "sorry" for her at the time.....just becasue It was THAT good.....THAT universal in it's appeal. I knew she'd never top it.

She remains one of the most intriguing and compelling artists in pop today. I hope she never stops.

And my critiques aside, If that bitch comes back here to POrtland....IMMA BE THERE next time. Even if she does only nothin but all the tracks offa "Bitter" (ha)....she's worth it....any way you slice it.

All is forgiven, Efan. It's about time you smoked her herb. lol

This isn't my favorite Meshell joint, but it's solid. And "Come Smoke My Herb" and "Good Intentions" -- played LOUD and equalized for maximum thump -- send me flying! music

I adore this woman, she's an awesome artist. I enjoy Comfort Woman most, but they're all pretty strong for me (Plantation being weakest, but hell - its her first). I'll always buy, always listen exclaim

I like this album. One of her best, IMO. Love Song #1 & 3 and Andromeda are my favorites.
