John Frusciante Quits Red Hot Chili Peppers With “No Drama”

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has confirmed that he has “quit” the band, writing in a MySpace blog post, “To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction.” The Peppers are reportedly working on their follow-up to 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, and rumors began circulating last week that Frusciante had permanently left RHCP and was replaced by guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who along with Frusciante toured with the band in 2007 and also appeared on Frusciante’s 2009 solo album The Empyrean. Until now, representatives for the RHCPs would not confirm the news of Frusciante’s departure to Rolling Stone. Frusciante clarifies in his MySpace post that he actually left the band over a year ago when they were on indefinite hiatus.

“I really love the band and what we did,” Frusciante writes, adding that there was no drama or anger involved in his decision to leave. “Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.”

Frusciante’s statement ends his second stint with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After appearing on 1989’s Mother’s Milk and 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Frusciante left the Peppers in 1992. Following RHCP’s brief Dave Navarro era, Frusciante rejoined the band for their three most recent albums: Californication, By The Way and Stadium Arcadium. In September, the band was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; as RS revealed earlier this week, the Peppers will not be a part of the Hall’s class of 2010.

Read Frusciante’s full letter to fans here:

“When I quit the band, over a year ago, we were on an indefinite hiatus. There was no drama or anger involved, and the other guys were very understanding. They are supportive of my doing whatever makes me happy and that goes both ways.

To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction. Upon rejoining, and throughout my time in the band, I was very excited about exploring the musical possibilities inherent in a rock band, and doing so with those people in particular. A couple of years ago, I began to feel that same excitement again, but this time it was about making a different kind of music, alone, and being my own engineer.

I really love the band and what we did. I understand and value that my work with them means a lot to many people, but I have to follow my interests. For me, art has never been something done out of a sense of duty. It is something I do because it is really fun, exciting, and interesting. Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.

Sending love and gratitude to you all.”

Personally, I think Frusciante is a genius. He has released many solo cd's this decade and they are brilliant ("Shadows Collide With People," "The Will To Death," etc.) I thought the last RHCP album ("Stadium Arcadium") had some great things going on musically but in terms of lyrics, vocals, and melody, it seemed pretty weak to me.

I've always thought Frusciante was the one who took RHCP to another level that they would have never acheived without him. I'm sure Frusciante will continue to release brilliant music. As for RHCP, not so sure. Hopefully they will find someone to fill the guitar spot and help them create some great music because I am a fan.

Too bad, he's a huge part of what they do, especially since his return. His backup vocals & guitar parts are what make the songs worth listening to repeatedly.

I was not that into Stadium Arcadium at first, but the second disc has come back into rotation for me. The album as a whole is too long, but the quality of the songs is really strong, especially disc 2.

But I'm surprised he lasted this long. He's sober now, but still not a very normal guy. He seems too sensitive & touchy to be in such a corporate machine, which is what the RHCP have become.

what he did with the peppers brought them up a whole lot of notches for me.

I first noticed him on the sublime solo for "Scar Tissue" I thought wow, who is this guy! It's almost euphoric.

Very disappointed to hear this, but I could see this coming. I am happy to hear that he will be continuing his solo work .

Maybe this is what they need. They've become a bit too easily listening with their last few albums.

They've never topped Blood Sugar Sex Magic.

Yep. I didn't think Stadium Arcadium was a bad album. It was definitely more "commercial", but it had some good spots on it.

The rest of them should take the hint and pull the plug.

They've been on a steady decline since Californication. Stadium Arcadium was rubbish.

They're all interesting and talented musicians/performers outside of RHCP, but together it's all gone a bit stale.

This might be a little bit off-topic, but have you noticed that the first track "Before The Beginning" from John's last album "The Empyrean" sounds very much like "Maggot Brain"? Maybe it was some kind of a tribute..? hmmm

This doesn't suprise me.

Frusciante has been carrying them for a bit... He wrote majority of Stadium and did most of the production work.

I love his solo albums, the emperyean was a little too long winded in some segments.

Agree with comments above. he is far from "normal" he is very much an eccentric genius who doesn't drive a car etc...

It was often funny to see him play songbird or how deep is your love at the shows and the fans would think he was being funny but they didn't get that is him.

I buy anything he touches... brilliant guitar player. and curtains is one of my fav albums.
Music is the best...

Thank god....

I love Johnny....but FFS.....SO tired of seeing a decent modern funk band ruined by stale-ness.

Maybe now we'll get something other than "Under The Bridge #14".
