All good points but you go to a music store now and pick up every single rap cd they have 99.9% have collabos, go to the RB section and at least 80-90% have collabos, its a rule now to have it all the time, not just a special occasion. This is now a blueprint when you make an album in these 2 genres, "who we gonna get to be on this, whos hot now?" But look at the whole 90's and 00's, i mean every cd you pick up has something like (featuring) on it. You werent picking up a Richard Marx cd in the 80's and seeing Featuring Taylor Dayne, or Kool and The Gang featuring Jon Bon Jovi. Sure you had an occasional duet, but the last 20 years its almost been the rule of law. I still disagree...during the 60's and 70's we also had music specials that forced collaborations down our throat *and* movie musicals and in the 80's you had everyone and their mother working with jam & lewis. don't forget herb albert worked with janet to gain exposure. Babs Streisand made it a fine art working with Bacharach, BeeGees, Donna Summers, Brian Adams and Celine Deon. Heck, Herb Albert (a non-singer) got a hold of Bacharach *and sang* so he could have a hit. Here is the difference between then and now. Back then, the collaborations that you speak of, were done because people wanted to see what would happen when two all ready established artist from musical backgrounds, got together and made music. I don't think that these were "forced down" our throats. A perfect example would be the MacCartney and Wonder collaborations,(Ebony Ivory/What's that you're saying), people were interested to see what would they come up with. Now, the collaborations that are being dreamed up today ARE being forced down our throats. As I said before, today's collaborations are done to trick an all ready naive listening and buying audience, with imagine rather than substance. Today, record company execs rely more on imagine than on material, (I believe they know that what is being written is garbage). By pairing Drake with Jamie Foxx, they know that they are in win win situation, fans of either artist will buy it. Because back then, it was more about the music and the song. Now it is more about who is hot at the moment and pairing them together. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

People have always collaborated but it didn't become so widespread until after Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. After that, every damn body was collaborating to the point that it was sickening. Andy is a four letter word.

I was gonna say. Most of the people that had solo albums, also played as musicians on someone else's album.

Collaborations of the past were more about creating something fresh and new between two artists with fan followings of their own.
Todays collabos are usually half assed attempt to make one artist appealing to the others audience by having the latter appear on the track of the lesser know former. They usually include some mind numbingly elementary rap or a completely unnecessary guest vocalist singing some trifling hook. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
