Norah and John Mayer deliver the goods on new releases Getting back to just good old playing. People are already saying Norah has gone ROCK on the new album, but again that is just a buy-line for a lame music article. True Norah has dumped the piano and her band on her latest album, though it pops up now and then and so does Jesse Harris, her favorite collaborator on songs. But Norah has nothing to lose, she has sold 40 million albums worldwide, people like her, she has her loyal following that saw her in clubs for 2 years (like me) in every NYC bar, so she knows who she is. Though this change might piss off her label, real fans of her and her infamous "changing directions" will love this. THose of you who think she is a one note artist, she is and has been featured with the most diverse artists, and i dont see anyone getting as diverse as her.
As for John Mayer, there is some confusion with him. He like Norah, mixes it up between Blues trios and then Pop Albums and Stupid romances he has. On this record IMO its John's best, meaning the song crafting is much stronger than ever, though still some issues, but a track like "Heartbreak Warfare" and his best song yet "Friends Lovers or Nothing" is far from a classic pop song, its six minutes and is a total George Harrison Rip off and "beatles Free as bird" Ringo Drum fill almost is played to the tee near the end, but if you are gonna rip off or get influence, at least get it from someone good. I heard a few of Mayer's songs and I think I will be copping his CD. I didn't like the song Norah sang on Letterman the other night, so I'm not so sure about her release. I've never been a big fan of hers anyway... "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..." | |

His is ok, im not big on him because hes too concerned with bullshit things and not his music, theres some filler on this record though and its far from perfect those 2 trracks stand out, but there are some bad ones too. Norah is a stronger record because of the people she has in the band and its more varied sound than his. John's is much better than his past pop records, but theres still something about him that i just dont like.
