This is my all-time favorite Jimi tune.

I can thank Hulk Hogan of all people for turning me on to Jimi, 'cause he used this song as his entrance theme.

That's how I got into Hendrix too!!!! lol

I'm torn between that song and this one as my all-time favorite hendrix song

chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

Think about this... Not one of these legends would win the X-Factor and as that seems 2 be the only way in2 the music business these days, how many legends are we missing out on in favour of these polished pop tarts? Sickening thought huh?

* I'm including this post because you asked the question: How many legends might we be missing out on?

40 years later I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not going to see Jimi when I had the chance in Chicago in May of '69. I had just found out that I was going to Viet Nam and I was in a bummed out mood.

Now I live in Santa Fe, NM and have regular chances to see this kid (Friday's his 22nd birthday) Ryan McGarvey play Hendrix songs as good as Jimi did his bad self back in the day.

I hope its not sacrilege to say that on this thread but until you experience him you just don't know.

Hmmmm... Jimi's been dead more than 22 years. if I didn't believe in reincarnation before I think Ryan represents a strong case for its existence.

There's all sorts of Youtube vids of him playing Hendrix songs (including his own tribute tune called Hey Jimi) but unfortunately the sound quality sux on em all.

His MySpace page has good quality tunes from his own CD which of course displays his virtuosity but they aren't Hendrix covers.

I think you'll get the idea though. This kid deserves to be known but it will be hard for him to have to deal with all the comparisons to carve out his own territory in the guitar legend genre.

There are a lot of musicians who can play the notes as good as Jimi, but where Jimi stood out was his creative abillity. After all, a copied piece of paper is never as good as the original. Ryan may be able to play note for note but can he create as well as Jimi did? That is what made Jimi a legend, and the others, not so much.

On youtube I found a rehearsal version of "Ezy Rider" thats' no doubt amazing musically right, but the the highlight is at the end when you hear Jimi, the band and the engineers talking and laughing about it all.

That's probably from...

...The Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions (for the historic Fillmore East shows)

It's actually quite good to hear Jimi let his hair down a bit.
Toward the end, Buddy Miles tries to end the rehearsal but Jimi starts telling jokes and keeps right on playing.

I love this here!

I agree.

McGarvey didn't compose the runs he plays so well and he didn't invent the guitar style that Jimi is known as the creator of.

That said, it is still a jaw-droppingly powerful experience to be in the presence of that level of talent doing their thing live.

True, I never got to see Jimi play so I can't compare from direct experience. I just feel lucky to be able to see Ryan play sets that include both his own compositions and his Jimi covers.

The kid is an awesome talent and only 22. I hope he goes places and becomes a legend himself.

Jimi made jaws drop, Ryan makes Jaws drop because they're both guitarists of stunning talent.

Leaving aside arguments of whether Jimi was better or not, I just wanted to bring Ryan to everyone's attention because Comegetwild asked the question (within the context of a Jimi thread), "...how many legends might we be missing out on" because today's entertainment machinery is featuring a lot of style over substance.

You're not going to see McGarvey on MTV and he has no tabloid value for the papparazi but if you see him advertised at a small club near you, you won't be sorry if you fork up the $10 to go hear him.
