MyNameIsCally said: You really have to remember the time in which he was in. In the 60's, nobody had ever seen someone play a guitar like that, many people said he was so good he was frightening. Not only with the guitar - the production was very cutting edge with the use of effects, panning & the like. The same goes for the Beatles & other 60's artists who are now said to be over-rated because in comparison to todays artists they may not be as jaw droppingly spectacular - but back then they were like something from another world~ (Although I'm only speculating because I'm 18 but I'm pretty sure that's the case lol)
Also I think Jimi is a cool vocalist, sure he may not be the best "singer" but his vocals in general are awesome in my opinion. Name one? Name one person today thats making music anywhere near as inventive and imaginitive as the artist from the 60's, 70's and 80's?

I've never been a Jimi fan and just basically never understood the magic that people have applied 2 him all of these years. Thee only album he made that I like is the Blues joint. Long story short, I watched a documentary of Jimi this past weekend of his first big gig in the U.S. the Monterey Music Fest in 1966. All I can say is WOW..... How in the hell did I MISS that 4 all of these years? Needless 2 say, I have some catching up 2 do. The Monterey Pop Festival was in 1967.. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

It's like I always say, if somebody's got some good music behind them, they don't have to be able to sing. A good voice is nice but I've always been into music first, voice second, and lyrics last. That's why I hate shit hop so much. When I ask folks how the hell can they like it, they always say "that artist is a poet, listen to those lyrics and what he's saying". Well, I don't give a damn what someone is saying in a song, where's the fucking music. I'm a casual Jimi Hendrix fan and not a huge one but jams like "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "Gypsy Eyes" get my ass to shaking every time. . . . [Edited 11/12/09 19:03pm] Andy is a four letter word.

I had never heard of Jimi Hendrix until Prince had the "Purple Rain" album out and all the pop magazines were comparing him to Jimi Hendrix so I went to the record store thumbing through the Jimi Hendrix albums and came across one that said "High, Live, and Dirty". It was on red vinyl too which looked kinda hot. Anyway, I got it home and hated it at the time, (mainly out of disappointment) I was expecting funk and synths since it was Prince that was being compared to him (hey what can I say, I was only 17 at the time).
Anyway, this one stood out when I heard it. A teenager is always going to go to the nasty songs first. . . . [Edited 11/12/09 19:16pm] Andy is a four letter word.

IAintTheOne said: Scene club 67 or 8 so many rotten copies of this bootleg 1968. From the official Jimi Hendrix site... SHUTTING DOWN THE SCENE CLUB SOURCE: Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. DATE: August 30, 2000 Most Hendrix fans view the years in which they first built their collection of Jimi Hendrix albums and singles with considerable fondness. Each new discovery furthered your appreciation and understanding of the greatest guitarist of all time. However, while Jimi was extremely prolific, nearly all of his followers would agree that you can never get enough of his music. Once Jimi's masterworks are safely a part of your collection, the temptation to pry into his murky, pre-Experienced past seems to deepen in intensity during each trip to the record store. A willing victim of my own curiosity, I too stand among the thousands who have plunked good money after bad in the many forms of *Live At The Scene Club. Far too many of us, it seems, have fallen prey to the many incarnations of this material over the years. Even at top international record chains like Tower and HMV, you can't help but plow through this stuff in the Jimi Hendrix section. Jimi's March 1968 impromptu jam session at the Scene Club in New York is among a host of self-made club recordings the guitarist preserved on his personal reel to reel deck. A number of similar recordings from the Generation Club, Unganos, and Cafe A Go Go have also survived, all of which provide a window into the spontaneous creativity and sheer joy Jimi derived from such chance musical encounters. This was particularly so in 1968, as Hendrix's success earned him the money to purchase the required recording equipment [a virtually unthinkable notion for Jimi just eighteen months earlier]. Jimi's fondness for the Scene and its frequent after hours jam sessions has been well documented. The special significance of this particular amatuer recording was that it paired Jimi and Jim Morrison, two of rock's biggest icons. The identities of the other musicians who participated that early March morning have never been definitively established. For many years, Johnny Winter was rumored to have been the second guitarist heard on the tape. Winter, however, has emphatically denied any participation in a number of interviews. Others have speculated that Rick Derringer was the second guitarist. A more likely scenario would be Eire Apparent guitarist Mick Cox. Cox was among a group of people in possession of the infamous tape in late 1970. Nonetheless, no other participants in the jam have ever been identified. Confused? Apparently, so is everybody but the bootleggers. Over the years they have inadvertently cited Winter, Buddy Miles, Noel Redding, and a host of other notables as part of Morrison's early [sentence incomplete] Shortly after the guitarist's death in September 1970, Jimi's manager Michael Jeffery was approached with an offer to purchase the original tape. Not surprisingly, no deal was ever consummated. Denied a legitimate avenue for release, copies of the jam session began to circulate among the rock and roll underground. Soon thereafter, the recording was widely bootlegged in a variety of configurations [the colored vinyl Sky High is just one prized example]. The motivation behind the rampant bootlegging was obvious. Pure profit. The unique pairing of Hendrix and Morrison, as well as the controversy generated by the vocalist's expletive laden rants, heightened interest in the recording. While never officially licensed by either the Doors or representatives for Jimi Hendrix, a rash of albums featuring the Scene Club material began to clog record bins around the world. In an effort to try and stem the tide of these illegal and blatantly misleading releases, Experience Hendrix recently joined forces with The Doors. In describing this successful joint effort to various media outlets, Doors manager Danny Sugarman could barely suppress his enthusiasm. Experience Hendrix, Sugarman informed the press, had recovered the Scene Club tape and were burning it. Contrary to the report, Sugarman was only partly correct. The Scene Club tape has not and will not be destroyed by Experience Hendrix. Despite its contents, it remains a piece of history and will simply be stored in the Hendrix tape library. That's not to say, however, that it won't be buried in the back underneath as many heavy objects as we can manage! Besides, had we actually had to burn the original tape and all of the various vinyl, cassette, and compact disc Scene Club editions which have been issued for nearly three decades, the resulting bonfire might ultimately engulf the planet! http://www.jimi-hendrix.c...eclub.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= * On the site, this is a javascript link which opens a window titled ALBUMS TO AVOID. At that point you can click on the various bootleg covers that have appeared over the years. That's probably from... ...The Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions (for the historic Fillmore East shows) It's actually quite good to hear Jimi let his hair down a bit. Toward the end, Buddy Miles tries to end the rehearsal but Jimi starts telling jokes and keeps right on playing.
