I grew up in a small East Texas town, but frequented Dallas a lot. Even Dallas didn't play Melba. She was not big here at all. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I love her songs "This Is It", "Lean on Me", "You Stepped Into My Life", "Love Me Right", "Falling", "Read My Lips" and "Let Ev'ry Voice and Sing".
I heard her version of "Sunny" and it was great. And I love her "Purlie" songs, especially "I Got Love". I just found out a minute ago she's 64!

Yeah, she had consistent success on the R&B charts from the late 70s until the end of the 80s.In my area, they played her songs alot.Like Stephanie Mills and Phyllis Hyman, she had alot of success on the R&B charts without crossing over and becoming a huge "pop" superstar.

I remember Stephanie Mills getting a lot of air play here as well, but not so much Phyllis. Phyllis got more air play during the quiet storm than in regular rotation. Same for Angela Bofil. Melba, on the other hand, didn't get much air play around here. I think she must have been big in places like NYC, Chicago, etc. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Of the three mentioned, Stephanie Mills had the most pop support.

Think about it, Stephanie was WAY more marketable than the other 3. She was younger than them. She had "funkier" songs and had Mtume behind her. Sure, Phyllis and others worked with Mtume, but he had MAJOR success with Stephanie, Roberta and others. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

If you ask someone white about Stephanie Mills, I bet they start singing "I never knew love this before..." lol

Plus the fact that she kept alot of leechers around her which led to her infamous long bankruptcy, I seriously think that had she surrounded herself with BETTER business minded people, she would've found other media outlets that could've revived her career(such as a new sitcom,,,,that is different from the one she starred in in the early 70s).

Didn't Melba own parts of Hush Productions? I don't know why I thought I heard that. That would have made her a very rich woman. Especially since Freddie Jackson was selling like crazy. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

The whole "notion" of letting your husband take FULL control of your hard earned savings and manage you is intersting to say the least,,,,,lemme say though that I'm NOT generalizing the whole group I knew afew did right by their artists/wives, but a SHIT load of them didn't/or couldn't(to be fair).

Melba said she and Charles Huggins (her ex) formed the company, I'm guessing she did own it because she described it as a $25 million boutique because they were hands-on with EVERYTHING with the company. Because Melba's ties with Hush was connected to Charles, she wasn't able to maintain any asset she gained from the company's success.

Exactly. And unfortunately Melba's a classic case. She should've educated herself on finances and how to gain assets rather than letting men run her career. Because she basically let the men do everything, her career (and life) got fucked with.

You notice how a lot of her friends on "Unsung" were like "what the fuck?" Melba is 64 years old now, I'm sure if she ever had a comeback on film or whatever, SHE'LL be the one who won't let people take her money away.

She's not so innocent either, she damn near filed for bankruptcy earlier in the mid-70s where she had to go back and live with her parents for awhile,,,,according to Unsung. One could not exactly call her a shrewd business woman. But that episode with her husband gave her an ugly dose of reality though.
