Shalamar - Go For It (1981)...yay or nay? The first track is absolutely wretched. Should I even bother subjecting myself to the rest of the album??? [Edited 11/9/09 19:04pm]

All I have is the 45 "Sweeter As The Days Go By". I haven't heard anything else from the album because that's the only song that got any airplay in my area. I don't think the album did well at all.

[Edited 11/9/09 19:04pm] It's just an okay album IMO, they let Jeffery Daniel write some of the cuts on it instead of the usual team of writers,Dynasty being the main ones. None of the songs really have that "SOLAR SOUND" to them, there's only four cuts off it I like, "Sweeter As The Days Go By", "Talk To Me", "Running", and lol yes the title track "Go For It" I would say if your a big Shalamar fan add it to your collection, if your just a casual don't. The only reason I have it is to complete my Solar collection, my favorite record label from the late 70's-Early 80's. [Edited 11/9/09 20:59pm]

With Shalamar though, at least one song from that album got airplay. I don't remember hearing any from the Lakeside album and didn't know it existed until I saw it in a used record store years later and bought it. Andy is a four letter word.

Yup I have that one Vain, I had never heard any of those cuts either until I got it off Ebay two years ago. "Back Together Again" is my favorite off that album, one of our DJ's in Philly, Gregg 'G-Force" Evans would spin "Back Together Again" in the mix on his Saturday night show a few years back.

Yeah, this album is surprisingly mediocre. It reminds me of the Whispers' 1981 album 'This Kinda Lovin',which the group produced themselves. It's missing the classic "Solar sound" and is filled with weak, generic songs that go nowhere. They wisely came to their senses for the next album,'Love Is Where You Find It'.They allowed Leon Sylvers to play a bigger part in the production.

Yeah The Whispers "This Kinda Lovin" album was another one from 1981 that didn't have the "SOLAR SOUND" on it, with the exception of course being the title track which is great. I think Leon, Dynasty and crew were too busy workin' on they're own album "The Second Adventure" as well as the other great 1981 Solar album by the Sylvers "Concept" which has the Solar Sound all on it.

This was the only Shalamar albume we ever hated back in the day. I always wondered if this thing was part of some "contractual obligation"
Andy's comparison to Lakeside's "Keep On Movin" album (which is a NON-SOLAR effort) is an apt one. I'd skip it. Funk Is It's Own Reward

That seemed to be going around during that era. Rick James had a hot album with "Fire It Up" and then followed it with "Garden Of Love" which was decent but "Big Time" was the only thing that really hit it off. Then he bounced right back and made his biggest album ever, "Street Songs". All this was going on right after the disco era ended. If you notice right at the beginning of the 1980s on pop radio after disco died, in the period before new wave (or whatever it was called) really took off, there were a lot of tamer groups like Air Supply and Kenny Rogers on pop radio. Maybe the R&B groups figured they needed to tone it down a little too but it didn't work. Just a thought. Either that or maybe they got tired and needed to slow it down and catch their breath from all the ass shaking of the disco era and once they caught their breath, they got right back up and started shaking ass again.
