Oz Noy - Innovation at its Finest
Written by Michael Ross

Manhattan is a big place. As such, there’s always something going on, somewhere to go, and something to see. But if you ever happen to find yourself in Manhattan on a Monday night, around 10:30 pm, and near Greenwich Village, do yourself a favor and pop your head into Paul Colby’s The Bitter End on Bleeker Street. Chances are you might run into guitarist Oz Noy performing with a trio that might include Will Lee and Anton Fig from David Letterman’s Late Show band, or possibly Saturday Night Live bassist James Genus and drummer Keith Carlock, of Sting and Steely Dan fame—or some combination thereof. Maybe you ask yourself why these top-flight musicians would play such a low-paying gig—if it pays anything at all—at a small club, with a guitar player who is far from a household name. And the answer might be because he’s one of the most exciting and innovative guitarists to come along in years.

Noy is definitely that, and probably more. By his teens, the Israeli-born Noy had already internalized the styles of guitar legends Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. By the age of 24, he had firmly established himself as an accomplished session player in his home country. Since his arrival in New York in 1996, Noy has performed, toured and recorded with the likes of Richard Bona, Chris Botti, Phoebe Snow, and Gavin Degraw, among others. Along the way, he has also found the time to record and release three solo records with the sidemen named above, featuring compositions that combine his influences, yet without sounding anything like them. Thoroughly schooled and grounded in jazz technique and harmony, Noy’s playing also evidences anarchic rock and roll tone and spirit through inventive and liberal use of effects. In this interview with Guitar Edge, he discusses those effects, as well as his new record, and his unique use of drummers.
