Who can be considered strictly POP??? Madonna
Kylie Minogue Lady Gaga Britney Spears Christina Aguilera Spice Girls Backstreet Boys NSync 98 Degrees New Kids on the Block Tiffany Deborah Gibson Paula Abdul Savage Garden Jessica Simpson Mandy Moore Annie Danii Minogue Hanson George Michael (?) Annie Lennox (?) Can Elvis be considered plainly pop? Jackson 5? Ricky Martin and J.Lo - or are they crossover latin pop? it depends on your definition
most of those artists have elements of disco, electro, techno, dance, rnb, soul, funk, rock and even indie (remember kylies deconstruction albums) pop is short for popular, as in "contemporary popular music", so on that basis they are pop, as are all artists who appear in the music charts

OK, I'm taking a piss. But you know what I'm hinting at.

yeah, but i think even though pop is technically short for 'popular music' that's just etimology, history...it's morphed into its own label, its own genre. somehow if too much rock, r&b/hip hop influence, or latin is involved, it's something else. that's how justin, kelly, pink, beyonce get away with not being strictly defined as 'pop.' I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

yet, somehow, a dance/electronic/techno vibe can be served up a lot more per square inch in a 'pop' record...yet that's a slippery slope too, before being considered 'just' electronica or 'raver music'...or 'euro' I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

lady gaga has only become POP as the shift of american music tastes in the recent months
she was a bubbling under artist for most of 2008 and late 07. otherwise she'd be a dance artist like Kristine W, Robyn, or those in coming british acts La Roux, Little Boots, Ladytron, and the like. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Hmm..
there was a really interesting list done by Slant Magazine and their definition of pop was really interesting.. http://www.slantmagazine....talpop.asp Defining the word "pop" was a task in and of itself. Just a few of the informal definitions we stumbled upon were "of or for the general public," "popular or popularized," and "of, relating to, or specializing in popular music." But none of these seemed to fit the idea-bubble floating above our heads. Here, "pop" isn't a broad definition, which means no hip-hop (sorry, Lauryn, Dr. Dre) and no straight-up rock (no Nirvana, no Radiohead). Instead, we have chosen to focus on pure, post-rock-n'-roll-era pop genres (pop/rock, pop-soul, synth-pop, dance-pop, electronic-pop, folk-pop, dream-pop, vocal-pop, euro-pop, jangle-pop, alt-pop-basically anything with the word "pop" attached to it), which can all be defined with disease-like words like "infectious," "contagious" and, our favorite, "gelatinous." I quite liked their list.

Robyn already had 3 hit singles in the USA, all which was from her self-titled debut album. And all 3 tracks were dance-pop. Sadly, she never charted on the USA charts ever since. 2. Although they never had crossover success in the USA, Labytron has a cult following at the height of the nu synthpop & electrocrash movements that took place in the first half of the 2000's.
