Lady Gaga Sets Billboard Chart Record - 4 pop radio #1's from Debut Album

Lady Gaga Sets Latest Billboard Chart Record
by Gary Trust, N.Y. | November 02, 2009 5:46 EST

Lady Gaga becomes the first artist in the 17-year history of Billboard's Pop Songs chart to notch four No. 1s from a debut album, as "Paparazzi" rises 3-1.

The singer - recently honored as Billboard's Rising Star - previously led Pop Songs with "Just Dance," "Poker Face" and "LoveGame" from her debut release, "The Fame." The set has sold 1.56 million copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, The album will be re-released in expanded form as "The Fame Monster" Nov. 23.

Since the Pop Songs chart debuted in October 1992, two artists prior to Lady Gaga had plated three No. 1s from their first albums: Ace of Base and Avril Lavigne. (Alanis Morissette also enjoyed a trio of leaders from her first U.S. album, "Jagged Little Pill").

KMVQ (Movin' 99.7)/San Francisco played "Paparazzi" the most times - 131 - of all Pop Songs reporters in the current chart's tracking week (Oct. 26-Nov. 1), according to Nielsen BDS. "Lady Gaga has come on to our station like a tornado," says Movin' Program Director Michael Martin. "When you make hit records, the audience responds, and we would be foolish not to give them what they want."

Check tomorrow's edition of Chart Beat for more details on Lady Gaga's history-making week.

A chart based on airplay, is that right? Why? nobody listens anyway. Why don't they just have a chart based on the most money paid by a label to promote a song on the radio? same thing?

The redundant chart.

What kind of bullshit chart record is that, who even looks at that chart? Its a useless chart, like the others, but that one is like saying, i have had 5 straight number ones on the jazz fusion neo soul charts.

Its got nothing to do with the music, its the actual chart, had their been one chart or two charts in existence then maybe this is a big record, but the way playlists go now for radio, and the fact that billboard has like 78 charts now, its not that meaningful as back in the day, i mean when she ties the or passes the Elton John "30 straight years with at least 1 top 40 HIT sales/airplay" then props she will get, now that is a record

I care about her. And congrats to her. I like her.

I'm about tired of the spin put on such-and-such record being broken on this-or-that obscure chart with extremely narrow criteria, etc.

I'm totally over the charts, and it sounds like everyone else is too if this is a noteworthy accomplishment.

Because people simply download it rather than buying it. So she has no chance of hitting say, 10 million in sales. But I bet her albums' been downloaded online over 5 million times.

Man, do I agree with you on a lot of levels. Some radio stations only play what they are told to play by higher ups. They have lists to adhere to. Only play these songs and maybe throw in a FEW songs that are not on the list. It's definitely about money in some way. I called a local radio station to play new Donna Summer when Crayons came out in May of 2008 and they told me that it would have to hit Top 40 FIRST to be considered to be played. That's why I don't listen to radio music now. They play only those songs that are high up on the charts which results in repetitious plays of the same songs over and over. I just listen to whats on my zune and pretnend that's my radio station.

I really, really, really, really wish people who don't like Gaga, or any other artist, stayed the fuck away from threads about them pray

Some people ruin it with the whole "She sucks," "She's ugly," "That's not music" bullshit. I wish they were a bit considerate and respect that some of us would actually like to talk about her music, or whatever hug

It's only the chart that tracks the biggest airplay format in the US, but okay.
