hmph! It's one of the best pop songs of the decade (if not the very best).

It is the musical equivalent of Prozac. God awful droning music with a droning vocal performance . In addition, I think we all know that Rihanna blew up because she was slobbering Jay-Z’s knob. At least with P protégées it is obvious what is going on and he did come up with some decent music for some of his conquest but what do you expect it is the non-rhythmic generation doing the best that they can do.

Must you be so grotesque?

Rihanna was 16 when Jay Z discovered her, plus he was engaged to Beyonce, whom he'd already been with for at least 4 years. Rihanna was already dating Chris Brown by then so if you'd like to keep speculating that she's sleeping with him, go ahead, but your little theory has no evidence to back it up.

Anyway, Jay Z discovered Kanye, too, did Kanye, to quote you, slobber Jay Z's knob to get HIS fame?

Umbrella was the biggest selling song of 2007 and, like someone else said, one of the better songs to come from this crappy decade of music.

If you think your public knowledge of who was dating whom exempts any of these individuals from running around you are on crack.

Jay Z was a drug dealing piece of shit so I would not put anything pass him and perhaps Kayne was slobbing his knob. Stranger things have happend.

I also could give a shit about Umbrella being the top selling song of 2007.
"The Macarana" was a top selling song once as well and that was just as annoying and crappy as Umbrella.

Well, to a degree, most artists are product in some way but when I say PURE PRODUCT, I mean when an image is completely instilled on a person. Denise was Vanity before she was Vanity, she just didn't have the name. She was also Vanity AFTER she was Vanity. Her personality was what it was. Prince just made her famous.
Your last six words are the answer to your question.
Appolonia? Come on now. We see how that went. Did you hear her solo album?

In short - ALL of them had ponani power. Lets throw the rest outta the window and call this shit exactly what it is hammer

For sure. I liked a few of her songs but she was basically Prince's puppet
and Vanity 6 was Prince answer to the Mary Jane Girls.

I agree that Umbrella is a great song, very catchy and melodic. Probably one of the decade's best. To me though, she is so 2007 and she wasn't annoying then, now she kind of is cause of her half assed autotune vocals on hip hop tracks.

Honestly she is rammed down your throat, you really have no choice. Someone posted on the Robin Thicke thread about how artists used to do an album a year. NOW that is true that was the way for all artists back in the 70's and 80's, but now that we are in the MEDIA MACHINE you have Beyonce really being the only one that does it, and now Rihanna, and soon LaDy Gaga will be the new "played out chick" the thing is back in the 70's you had an album a year from everyone, it was a battle, now maybe 3-4 artists do it, its the same producers on all the work , so we really get nothing new in the mainstream, and then even more shit on the net.

But after all that here is her claim to fame....

But dont limit this to her, the males are just as capitalizing of their looks, peeps like timberlake usher and robin thicke get played because of their looks just as much.

Actually, you're right - it is and I'm no Rihanna fan.

I actually downloaded the song without her vocals (I'm not a fan of her voice AT ALL) and listened to that version instead.

The production is killer on that track.

Really? confuse I always thought it was a double standard these days: The women have to look like supermodels to get any mainstream attention (like Beyonce, Ciara, Rihanna, etc), but the men can look like darn-near anything and still somehow become famous (like Timberlake, Ne-Yo, Thicke, Lil Wayne...basically all popular male singers/rappers today). disbelief

Well they all get the magazine covers too, I mean who is the big rock male? John Mayer, i mean if he couldnt do music he would be doing calvin klein ads, or actually i think he does something like that. Timberlake and USher have probably done more magazines and had their shirts off more than anyone in history, so, its really the same thing. I mean 95% of the males getting played and time are also borderline posers and models too.

OK, you got me with John Mayer. lol 'Cause, yeah, he definitely could be a model. Especially circa "Continuum." love Although he's mainstream, he seems so underground without much publicity, and I didn't even think about him. Common is another one, but again, he's not as popular as the "superstar" men I listed above, who are just not cute to me, lol.

I hate how the looks theory is always brought up yet it never explains how she has female fans. I'm a straight female and I like her work for what it is, how 'bout you all just face the facts that some people like the music you don't and move on?

So I'm watching this diane sawyer interview on youtube, and I'm thinking two things.

1)Her ears are either really weirdly shaped or really perfect.
2)How the hell did she get so popular!?!

Let's go down the list again
-can't sing exceptionally(or even mediocre)
-can't dance exceptionally(or even mediocre)
-Doesn't write her own songs
-doesn't contribute anything to the musical aspect of her albums
-isn't incredibly fine(let's be real people, if you saw her walking down the street you'd think about her five head before you thought about talking to her)
-doesn't have an outstandingly personality(not a bubbly one, not a enigmatic one, not an eccentric one, very bland)

catchy songs

How does someone with almost no talent becoming reigning pop queen of the late 00's?

I can't even take those Jay-z rumors seriously because When Looking at Beyonce compared to Rihanna, or in fact a bunch of chicks who've come and gone in the Def Jam roster between 05-09 I would LMFAO if Jay-z did all this for a little side action with Rihanna.

How the hell did this happen!!!
