Tom Joyner

was just watchin Tom's "Sky Show"....

Maybe cause I'm an old guy (42).....but 2 things seem to occur to me....

1.) Tom makes an ass of himself.....lol.

2.) How cool would it be to make an ass of ourselves with the HUGE list of old school band that Tom has brought to us over the years (watched him party on-stage with fucking Cameo this week alone for instance)

Just curious what ya'll think of Tom. I think he's the goods....in spite of himself..wink

funny you mentioned him because my husband is always pointing out how he's always dancing on stage with the bands and it's embarrassing to watch but i think he's cool and harmless lol!

yes....exactly. I just can't help but feel he's "doin it for us all".....all us old-schoolers who can't party with our musical heroes like we used to.

It's odd....for as dorky as he looks....THAT's ME.....LOL.....if I had the chance. Our bands don't tour as much as they should. I can almost see it in his eyes....."I'm acting a fool for all of y'all"....LOL

I love Tom, but Tom is NOT making an ass of himself (at least he doesn't think so). Tom really thinks he's the shiznet and is being "hilarious".

If you pay attention to his show, he's really serious about "who's name is in the jingle" and firing people. It may come across as him joking, but he is really serious.

I miss the Sky shows he used to do. I think they got too expensive for affiliates to keep up. I know for a fact, they try to get the affiliate to pay for the act, but some try to encourage Tom/Reach Media to pay for them. That's why you got a lot of repeat acts. I know Cameo, The Time, SOS Band, The Whispers, Teena Marie, etc. were all on there several times.

I used to listen to the Sky Show every Friday morning and I used to record a lot of them also. I also used to enjoy the "Old School Breakfast Mix" every Tuesday and Thursday morning until they started mixing the old with the new. When he stopped having the old groups perform on Friday mornings, that's when I stopped listening.

As for Tom the person, I can't stand him and don't listen to him at all if I can help it. It was very hard not to listen to him when he was delivering the funk but since he stopped having good music on his show, it was very easy to tune him out. I consider him a black racist and have no time for him.

What makes you say that? Is it the fact he says derogatory things about other races? I will admit that when he used to do that "hidden racism" bit, it would piss me off.

You guy's obseravtions I mostly agree with.

I don't think he's a "racist" though.....Like to know more where Andy is coming from on that tip.

Regardless.....I think it's worth saying that Tom has brought us a lotta good times with the bands we love....deserves some credit for that. Just my .02.

OK callers....I want you to call in if you just KNOW a friend of yours or someone you know is dating a white person. You can't prove it, but you just KNOW it.

I can just imagine the responses from the callers if I had stuck around to find out.

Yeah playa....I saw him up there accepting that award with that white woman on his arm. Why does all these bruthas have to get them a white woman?

Thank God all black people don't think like that or a whore like me would never get any black dick. lol

But just imagine though if the same things were said on the air by a white DJ asking callers to call in if they just KNOW someone is dating a black person but that can't prove it.

I remember when he used to do that. I never stuck around after the commercial breaks to hear what he was going to say though because I don't want to be in a bad mood when I got to work. I just turned the channel so I really don't know what those segments were about. I just remember thinking...."Just shut the fuck up and play some damn funk".

They just talk a lot of silly shit in general. Seems like every time I flip to that channel they're talking instead of playing music. They will talk for 15 minutes, play a song, go to a commercial, talk for 20 minutes, play another song. Hell, that's more talk than music which isn't entertaining at all especially when you don't give a damn about whatever silly shit they're talking about. lol

I love for a DJ to talk because you know he's there playing the music and the announcing of the songs and maybe a few comments about THE SONG makes you feel like someone else is in the car with you keeping you company rather than just hearing song after song with no talk. But his show has so much talk these days, it's turned more into talk radio than a musical show. lol

I totally agree with you Vain .. I think the dude has some racial prejudice issues. For some reason he seems to think it's OK to mock white folks on his show .. I catch that vibe all the time from him. I wouldn't even mind so much if he'd mock black folks, too (like Steve Harvey does), but he seems to single out the one race he doesn't like ... fuck him!

I remember Joyner from way back in the day when he worked an AM radio station here in Chicago owned by Ebony/Jet Puplications. I use to listen to him but haven't for years and I enjoyed the Sky Shows. He's humor used to be a little bit more self-deprecating or he "shoot down" some entertainer who needed to be "tweaked" because their head was so far up their ass. As Joyner got bigger and I guess need to "standout" the humor.. the tone of the show became to me, meanspirited. I wasn't comfortable with that so, it's NPR or 24/7 news/weather/traffic for me.

Tom Joyner is an asshole. He lets his personal beliefs cloud the music. For example, he wont play R. Kelly or Chris Brown because of their personal issues. Tom, you aint the judge or jury, but you will play music that encourages kids to drink, have sex and get high.

This has been interesting. I think my more "positive" view of Tom has been from living here in the West.

You that have experienced him more on the radio seem to be pretty solid about the down-side of his work.

Imma take ya'lls word for it, I think. Thanks for the enlightenment.

I don't like Tom Joyner but these bits are done to make fun of racism in general.

Because in all honesty black people who have signincant others who are of a different race that they do not want to be seen with them in public have serious mental health issues and need to be exposed not because they are doing something wrong but because it is crazy to hide your siginifcant other from public view no matter what race they are.

I think Tom was making fun of the craziness of it all. In addtion, Howard Stern has said plenty of crap over the years that was racist as hell but has chilled out a lot since he went off of celsterial radio.

Exactly. I saw a documentary on him a few years ago. He grew up in The South (I'm thinking Alabama because he was originally supposed to be in The Commodores but Lionel Richie took his place instead). Anyway, after hearing about his experiences that he faced firsthand in those days due to racism, I can totally understand and sympathize with a lot of the way he feels about white people. I don't agree with all of it but I can certainly understand why he feels the way he feels.. But what is absolutely rediculous, is to have a problem with interracial dating or marriage. That's not hating a white person for what they have done to you, that's hating all white people simply because they are white, whether they are prejudiced or not. That's putting the white person dating or married to a black person in the same category as a damn racist and I find it highly offensive considering that most of my relationships, sex partners, and friendships have been with black people. Not to mention, I have a sister married to a black man.

But what tripped me out, is when he interviewed Teena Marie. He kissed her ass all up and down that morning. Yeah, everybody knows Teena is cool and I'm a huge admirer of her because she was dating interracially back when it unheard of and even on the dangerous side. Yeah, she's more than proven herself but he seems to have his picks and chooses and he seems two-faced to me. I guarantee you, if Teena didn't have a huge black following, he'd throw her under the bus too.

Oh, don't get me wrong, back when he had the funk groups do live concerts on the air on Friday mornings and when he had the mix on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (before he started mixing the new bullshit with the old), he had the absolute best show on the air, musicwise. I never missed it. I used to get up early on Friday mornings and record as much of the concerts as I could before I had to leave to go to work. It's just the silly talk and bullshit that turned me off. When we got more into the 2000s and the 1990s were considered "old school" also and he started played 90s stuff, that's when I dropped his ass like a hotcake. lol

I'm fully aware of those dumb white bitches and men that won't be seen in public with the black person they are dating. If that was the point that he was trying to make, then he needs to make it clear. But I can just imagine the calls coming in from the callers if I had stuck around such as....

Yeah, fuck that white bitch.

What's he want that white bitch for anyway?

Get that white bitch's money, fuck her over, and then leave her.

I'm tired of these white bitches getting our black men. Hell, those bitches need to get them a white man. Stick with your own kind, white bitch.

He just wants that white bitch because she'll suck dick.

Those white bitches are fools and they'll take shit that us black women won't.

You know as well as I do, the type of responses that probably came in after that commercial break. I didn't stick around to listen because I've heard enough of that bullshit in my life and I wasn't about to listen to some more of it.

And as I said before, plenty of white folks hide their black partners but I've been doing what I do since 1979....from 1979-1990, it was black women....from 1990-present, it was black men....and black friends the entire time....and I never hid a damn thing. I flaunted it in the white racists' faces and enjoyed the fact that it pissed them off. So if that motherfucker wants to make a point, then he needs to make it clear because all of us aren't those stupid white bitches sneaking around in private like it's something "taboo".
