I love '101'.

I don't think that Prince created moody downtempo electro pop though. ABBA's 'The Day Before You Came' was nearly a decade earlier...



I think what's interesting about '101' though, is that it's got that weird funky bass, jarring key changes and a "diva" vocal over the top.

Good call,
No Prince did not create any new genres of music, but had a distinct quality to forge something orginal and timeless from the bits and pieces laying around him.

Unlike a lot of music produced in the 80's and 90's when i listen to that song, 1988 does not come to mind. ...and I think thats true of most of Prince's 80's music.
