NAME THAT TRACK!!!! (what's old is new again)

Oooh we gonna have some fun up in here my fellow orgers. Post a vid or mention a song that has sampled another song, then name that other song. This would be a good education for those who think today's music is so original and it would be fun to hear what all of you consider to be really good (or bad) use of sampled tracks. A game of "before" and "after".

I'll start with newly discovered and soon to be favorite tracks. biggrin

Beyonce used part of MJ's "I Can't Help It" (from Off The Wall) for sections of "Deja Vu", uncredited.

Listen to the opening bass and hook:

And listen to the :59 mark

Danke. Nowhere in the credits, that I've seen, does she credit or acknowledge Susaye Greene, Stevie Wonder as co-writers (they both wrote the song, MJ had no song writing credit on it). It lists only Beyoncé Knowles, Rodney Jerkins, Delisha Thomas, Makeba, Keli Nicole Price, Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) as writers, with Beowulf and Jerkins are producers.

Perhaps Susan and Stevie didn't own copyright? I think that's part of the sampling law. I think the law only applies to samplings in excess of 5 seconds but I'm not sure.

Not true. They're still listed as writers of the song. You can own a copyright on a song, but that doesn't mean you are necessarily able to up and change the creators on it.

Stevie owns his shit, so if anything, he'd own it. And that sample is beyond 5 seconds, and it's used repeatedly. It's a blatant rip-off. However, Beyonce's unpure business dealings have been discussed at length here recently, and it doesn't surprise me. It's all part of her "I'm a genius" mystique she's trying to create around herself.

The reason why they did not get credit, is because it is not an exact rip of "I Can't Help It". They are using the same cords, but they way that they are being played is slightly different, making them two totally different songs.

Yeah, it Beyonce's version adds an extra note and the phrasing is slightly different.

Let's not forget Vanilla Ice tried that "extra note" argument with "Ice Ice Baby", and got nailed big time.

We all know that Vanilla Ice was full of shit. This situation is different, because of the it was a live bass for one thing and it had that extra not and the phrasing was different. Vanilla's was a total sample.

I think his actions sealed his own fate. That guy was EVERYWHERE after "Ice Ice Baby". A lot of people look at him as a one-hit-wonder, but he really wasn't.

Sure his music career kind-of died, but he was in a pretty-high grossing movie and made a LOT of money.
