What makes melody original?

What makes a melody good? is it just something that you know is catchy? is it the music underneath that enhances it? and what makes a melody idiosyncratic and original?

I mean I can just tell these are great original melodies but I don't know why
Did Prince ever deny he had sex with his sister? I believe not. So there U have it..

One of those "mystical" things.....Stevie's "Creepin" is a good example thou. I believe it's the lack of melody that makes modern pop compare SO poorly against the music of past decades.

Not just that but chord progressions. These producers use the same chord (hell, sometimes not even a chord, just one note.) Hell, give me three chords in a modern song, name one??

I agree. It's really quite stupifying.....to listen to current shit against (almost) any decade past.....it always strikes me as the difference between musical black & white & Technicolor.

Not universally the case (there are modern exceptions that give me hope)....but the general lack of Melody (and complexity as Corv mentioned) in the new stuff feels almost "autistic" to me much of the time.
